Media literacy is…

...knowing how to tell if the information you see—on the news, online, or on social media—is true, biased, or misleading.

...the skill of being able to read, watch, or scroll through content—and spot what’s real, what’s fake, and what’s meant to mess with your emotions.

"It's (your name), hi! I'm calling to say Senator (their name) should vote NO on the GOP spending bill . Call it what you want—this bill does not help the American people. If this bill passes, millions will lose their health care; families, children, and veterans will lose access to food stamps; electricity costs will rise; rural hospitals that so many rely on will close; and that’s just a few reasons to vote no. Please don’t have a marvelous time ruining everything. You need to hear me out when I say, ‘Vote no!’”

Most people have no idea this is happening and Republicans are relying on that—there’s a reason they’re trying to quickly pass this bill.

What is Juneteenth?

Short for "June Nineteenth," Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. Federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state to ensure the freedom of all enslaved people. The troops' arrival came two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday.

How can I celebrate Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is celebrated across the country among Black families and friends with street fairs, parades, and concerts.

If you aren't Black and would like to recognize Juneteenth, it's a great day to honor and embrace Black culture through art and history! Take the opportunity to read a book by a Black author, watch a film that honors Black life, or support Black-owned companies.

Many of us are taught that the Emancipation Proclamation ended slavery in 1863, but for enslaved people in Texas, freedom didn’t come until two and a half years later on June 19, 1865.

Honor Juneteenth with #SwiftiesForHope by learning about the history of today and how to celebrate! 🩵🇺🇸

Call your Senators

• Anyone from any state can call:
(202) 224-3121

• Enter your zip code.

• When you’re connected to your Senator’s office, read this script. Their staff will write what you have to say. Hang up, don’t give up (call every day), for the life of us we want to get back.

“It’s (your name), hi! I’m calling to say Senator (their name) should vote NO on the GOP budget bill because of its cuts to Medicaid and SNAP. It’s treacherous that millions of people will lose access to their health care and access to food stamps if the Senate passes the bill. Call it what you want—it’s an attack on everyday Americans while covering billionaire tax breaks.”

A dark blue graphic that includes a screenshot of a post by Rep. Mark Pocan that reads:

Under Republicans SAVE Act, your driver's license won't be enough to vote.

You’ll need:

1. A passport, which more than half of Americans don't have and costs at least $130
OR
2. A birth certificate with your current legal name, which nearly 70 million married women lack
OR
3. Military services papers (not a military ID alone) with sensitive info

I'll be blunt. This is a modern-day Jim Crow bill that restricts access to the ballot box.
