The image is a cartoon of a wealthy landowner on horseback lording it over a starving family of labourers. The image formed the title page of a pamphlet from 1830 written in support of the Swing Riots, called "The Life and History of Swing, the Kent Rick-burner, written by himself.” The pamphlet purports to be the autobiography of Captain Swing, like General Ludd a fictitious figurehead of the movement, whose name was appended to many threatening letters in the riots.
Read about the Swing Riots of 1830 in 'Sevenoaks 1790-1914'. An early victim of labourers protesting their appalling living and working conditions was tenant farmer Jonathan Thompson, whose properties were set on fire 10 times in the space of 3 months. www.herts.ac.uk/uhpress/book... #SwingRiots
