The US used World War I to break leftist activism. 101 #Wobblies (members of #syndicalist union #IWW) went on trial #ThisDayInHistory in 1918. They were charged with ~10,000 crimes but no evidence was shown, only excerpts from union publications. They were convicted & imprisoned.

14 #Wobblies were arrested on #ThisDayInHistory in 1915 in a failed effort to drive the #syndicalist #union out of #SiouxCity, #Iowa. Their "crime" was holding street meetings to provoke arrest & fill the gaols in a #FreeSpeechFight lasting 'til #IWW won its rights in late April.

The National #Fascist Party was founded on #ThisDayInHistory in 1919 by #BenitoMussolini. It initially combined #syndicalist economics with #FarRight #nationalism, later ditching its economic ideals and embracing #corporatism. Italy is to-day led by a #neofascist successor party.

When I was #libertarian, I said that #unions were a #FreeMarket reaction to regulating business. Now that I'm a #Christo-Veganarchist of the #Syndicalist variety, I know that, when formed correctly, they're intended to #SeizeTheMeansOfProduction. Both instances are pro-worker in different contexts.
