The US used World War I to break leftist activism. 101 #Wobblies (members of #syndicalist union #IWW) went on trial #ThisDayInHistory in 1918. They were charged with ~10,000 crimes but no evidence was shown, only excerpts from union publications. They were convicted & imprisoned.

14 #Wobblies were arrested on #ThisDayInHistory in 1915 in a failed effort to drive the #syndicalist #union out of #SiouxCity, #Iowa. Their "crime" was holding street meetings to provoke arrest & fill the gaols in a #FreeSpeechFight lasting 'til #IWW won its rights in late April.

The #CentraliaTragedy occurred on #ThisDayInHistory in 1919. #IWW members had been repeatedly attacked, beaten, their #union hall looted. An #ArmisticeDay parade stopped outside the new hall and scared #Wobblies opened fire. #IWW activist #WesleyEverest was lynched that evening.

On #ThisDayInHistory in 1916, the #IWW was targeted by police and business leaders in the bloody #EverettMassacre. A shipload of #Wobblies trying to support a #strike were docking their ship when 200 vigilantes opened fire on them from land, with a dozen killed and 27 wounded.
