For sure. I’ve gotten way too deep into topics for details that would never translate into stories. As much as I genuinely enjoy learning for its own sake, there is a point where it gets too disconnected from the actual writing process 😅

Research happens on a pretty ad hoc basis. Usually I don’t know what I need to research until I realize I don’t know something necessary for the story. Then I’ll do a couple wiki dives until I’ve got enough of an handle on the subject I can keep going.

Sometimes a Wiki browse is enough, but I have absolutely gone as far as pulling up articles in scientific journals. Most recently I got immersed in newspapers from the turn of the century.
