He is remembered for establishing a hospital in what is now the West African nation of Gabon. The hospital and his decades working in it, made Schweitzer a humanitarian figure, though he has been called an especially paternalistic colonizer. He referred to people in Africa as “children without culture” who needed to be “civilized.” When speaking to African people, he would say, “I am your brother, but I am your big brother.”

In 1952, when Schweitzer was 77, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his medical work, his public stance against nuclear weapons and their proliferation, and for his philosophy which came to be known as “reverence for life.” This was the title of his 1933 book which was his call to reverse the decay of Western civilization by rebuilding its ethical foundation. For Schweitzer, that meant respecting life, in large part, the lives of others, including people as well as animals.
