Theres no doubt tho that the dogged defense of their brood by #Tabanidae flies is very odd for flies tho.

Hybomitra bimaculata ♂ today in Bengeo garden, sizeable woodland horse fly with obvious hairy eyes. Males are harmless but females are bloodsuckers though they cause no problem here. @uk-soldierflies.bsky.social @flygirlnhm.bsky.social #Tabanidae

Say what you like about their predilection for probing our upper parts, deer flies like this ♀ Chrysops caecutiens are fine looking beasts. This one attempted several landings on my head today at Allerthorpe Common, E. Yorkshire! #tabanidae @uk-soldierflies.bsky.social @dipteristsforum.bsky.social

A mall, fluffy moth like fly sitting on a leaf. Its thorax is hairy grey with black wings and a few small patches of iridescent pale blue scales.

A small black fly sits on the bark of a tree facing down. Its eyes and face are mesmerizing with a pari of digital looking lines running across each eye.

A #horsefly with colourful eyes. I don't know the species but I think it belongs to the family of #Tabanidae.

The head of an insect is dominated by two large eyes. The eyes are striped Blue and dark purple. It is quite striking. Below the head are the mouth parts and you can just make out the slender scissoring parts. There’s a fluffy thorax that the head is attached to and blurry legs come out from the plane of focus. You can’t really see the abdomen in this photograph. The horsefly is standing on a Finger as evidenced by the ridges of a fingerprint.

Female #Tabanidae (horse flies and deer flies) have scissoring mouthparts to cut up skin. Into this wound they add salivary coagulants to help keep the blood flowing to the point where they can drink it up. This bleeding helps identify the insect in rare cases of anaphylaxis to their bites
