"A police procedural that delights the reader with a strong sense of place. Tartan Noir at its best."

Ewan McGregor sprawls on the dancefloor at a ceilidh in an unidentified mid-green tartan dinner jacket in Shallow Grave (1994).
The poster to Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid, 1982. Steve Martin points a revolver at the audience. A shadow behind him puts its hands up as if in surrender, but it looks like its thumbs are at Martin's ears as if he's blowing a raspberry. The tagline is "Laugh, or I'll blow your lips off..." The movie is filmed in Detecto Vision.
Celebrating the final day of #Noirvember and #StAndrewsDay by paying tribute to my two favourite #TartanNoir films, Shallow Grave (Danny Boyle, 1994), Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid (Carl Reiner, 1982).
I Am Mine is the fifth on the DI Joanne Christie series set in Edinburgh. #crimewriter #crimewritersofbluesky #edinburgh #tartannoir #ianrankin #scotland #bloodyscotland
Most #TartanNoir writers have a writing style that includes very few depictions of vernacular Scots.
But some writers are more Scots heavy - accurately representing the real life proportions of Scots speakers in different social contexts.
I wrote another substack article about #TartanNoir writers actively oppressing the Scots language.

There's a google sheet here which lists over 200 #TartanNoir titles, authors, etc, with the numbers of Scots speakers noted.

After reading through 71 #TartanNoir Scottish crime fiction books, and counting the number of Scots speaking characters, I have put together a histogram.
The median proportion of Scots speakers is 4.5% many books depict no Scots speakers at all, occasionally some have more than 20% of characters.
Book number 28 in my read through of #TartanNoir Scottish crime fiction, and finally there's a murder victim who lived on the same street that I once lived on in Glasgow.

Imagine Philip Marlowe woke up one day with the mother of all hangovers and discovered he'd been turned into a Glaswegian. And not only that but he's saddled with a partner in the shape of his devious fat friend, The Bumble.

I know Hamish Macbeth isn't exactly #TartanNoir but if we're being comprehensive in our survey of then the cosy-crime Constable ought to be included.
Currently reading Ann Cleeves's "Dead Water" as book number twenty in my linguistic survey of #TartanNoir books.
Its set in Shetland, where according to the census 40.96% of people reported they could speak or read Scots.
In "Dead Water" I'm up to page 142 and there are no Scots speakers yet.

Now reading William McIlvanney's "The Papers of Tony Veitch" as part of my survey of Scots speakers in #TartanNoir
This one is exceptional, I'm only 40 pages in, but out of the 22 speaking characters 11 are speaking Scots - a 50% rate.
Most Tartan Noir books have hardly any, averaging 7%.
One of the downsides of not traveling to London this past summer - having to wait until today for a copy of @sirbenfro.bsky.social ‘s newest one…. #TartanNoir #EdinburghNoir #DetectiveTonyMcLean 🖤🖤🖤
Just finishing "Knots & Crosses" by Sir Ian Rankin, book #15 in my read-through of #TartanNoir assessing the depictions of Scots speakers.
Surprisingly there were two characters who spoke Scots in this book, both inconsequential to the plot, but better than none at all I guess.

DEPT. Q Season 2 is coming. Check out the story on my #blog, #LifeAfterGateway. Also included is the trailer for Season 1, which I found to be binge-worthy viewing on Netflix.

It’s fully halfway thru #TheGoodFather when I finally hit “gormless,” but still not a sign of “smirr.” Cmon, @liammcilvanney.bsky.social —your latest #tartannoir #mystery has been a brilliant read, but there are certain lexicographical expectations we your fans need fullfilled!
He was older than I remembered, but I knew who he was the moment I saw him. He still had a mop top of red curly hair, his face framed by black NHS spectacles with lenses as thick as the bottom of milk bottles. It was Jim Cowan, the Bumble’s brother. We stood looking at each other and then at Tony McCaffrey. ‘Is he...?’ ‘Yeah, he’s dead Jim. You could stick a pole up his arse and windsurf him down the Clyde.’ I opened my packet of Marlboros and offered them towards him. ‘I gave up,’ he said, taking one. THE BUMBLE'S END - Jimmy Bain
