The SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, located in East Flatbush, Brooklyn, has a rich history spanning over 150 years. It is the only academic medical center in Brooklyn and part of the State University of New York (SUNY) system. ### Early Beginnings - **1856**: The institution began as a dispensary established by German physicians in downtown Brooklyn to provide care for poor immigrants. This dispensary later evolved into the Long Island College Hospital. - **1858**: A medical school was launched, introducing the revolutionary concept of bedside teaching in hospitals rather than solely relying on classroom instruction[1][4][10]. ### Growth and Evolution - **1931**: The school was rechartered as the Long Island College of Medicine, with affiliations across Brooklyn hospitals[1][9]. - **1945**: Land was acquired in East Flatbush for a new campus. - **1950**: The "Downstate" era officially began with the merger of the Long Island College of Medicine and SUNY. This marked its inclusion in the SUNY system as a public institution[4][9]. ### Expansion and Milestones - **1953-1954**: Construction began on the current campus, with President Dwight D. Eisenhower laying the cornerstone for the Basic Sciences Building. - **1966**: The University Hospital at Downstate opened, alongside the establishment of the School of Graduate Studies, College of Nursing, and College of Health Related Professions. - **1985**: It was renamed the State University of New York Health Science Center at Brooklyn to reflect its expanded scope. - **2008**: The School of Public Health became fully accredited, making it one of only two such schools in the NYC metropolitan area[4][9][10]. ### Achievements and Contributions SUNY Downstate has achieved numerous medical milestones: - It was home to the first federally funded dialysis unit (1964) and New York City's first academic emergency medicine department (1991)[3]. It has been a leader in training doctors from underrepresented communities
