We have reviewed the top #TeamCognitiveLoad 2024 drivers overtime, and there are some interesting findings.
1. Stable high cognitive load drivers, team and task complexity
2. Season based cognitive load drivers, like metrics and pace

I'm seeing this trend in the industry of removing platform, enabling teams, DevEx teams, and instead moving people back to Product/Stream-aligned teams.

On the first picture, we can consider that the team is healthy, and the domain boundaries are well-defined as the teams are suited for fast flow of change with just the minimum collaboration between them.
But that's not what's really happening. If we look at the #TeamCognitiveLoad, we find problems
Exercise 2. With a Team Topologies diagram sharing 3 stream-aligned teams and one platform team. All 3 stream-aligned teams consuming from a platform team. And the next text next to it: Team cognitive load assessment result We are able to identify a common challenge among teams. Team complexity - With respect to cognitive load, the larger and more complex the team, the more stakeholders, the more transactive activities will be needed to coordinate members actions and the more communication is needed within the team increasing cognitive load. Contextual complexity - Too much contextual complexity - e.g. changing requirements, external circumstances, interruptions -tends to result in many unexpected situations during project execution. It is known to be linked to project team conflict and confusion as well as low project performance. Role load - Role overload is associated with various aspects of psychological strain, such as increased job stress,anxiety and a feeling of being mentally overwhelmed - all of which are linked to high levels of cognitive load.
