Hey #TeamWillpower

I want to do things a little different. You are all great writers and have as much advice to give as I do. Let's share the wealth!

So, my current WIP is my first time writing first person longform and I keep getting lost in my MC's thoughts. Any tips?

#TeamWillpower update!

It's been 2 WHOLE DAYS since I've posted (can you believe it?).

I've finally created my shortlist. My mind is officially off of queries and on manuscript pages. If you have questions, drop them here and I'll answer. Make sure to #RevPit your posts.

Hey #RevPit community,

Perfect Timing!

In my #10Queries posts this morning I mentioned the importance of your MC taking action to deal with story conflict and this week's Writing Excuses episode goes into detail on how to do that.

My favorite resource is the podcast Writing Excuses.

Some techniques I've internalized are K.M. Weiland's character arcs and Mary Robinette Kowal's primacy/recency technique for emphasizing certain details and hiding others.

#TeamWillpower Friday question:

What are some of your favorite writing resources? What techniques can you use without consulting your notes?

#TeamWillpower thought on queries:

Story stakes have two pieces: internal conflict and external goal. What does the MC have to lose/learn/overcome and how does that impact the external goal?

#TeamWillpower thought on queries:

The strongest queries center on the Inciting Incident and the decision the MC makes right after. It's important to know why they're forced to act and and what actions they choose to take to deal w/the conflict.

#TeamWillpower thought on queries:

The best character introduction features a contradiction. What the MC wants clashes with how they act, or their inherent nature is unsuited to the situation they're thrust into.

My answer: I spent all of last year reading all of the Cosmere books by Brandon Sanderson. The Stormlight Archives were my favorite.

I am also listening to Dungeon Crawler Carl on audiobook. Just started relistening to book 5 before I start book 6 for the first time.

Hi, Ayesha! Thank you for your thoughtful answers to everyone's questions. I learned so much from the thread! I am very late to this opportunity (Boo, work!), but in case you're up for one more, if you had to reread any MG novel tomorrow, which book would you pick up again? P.S. Go, #TeamWillpower!
