🧶 #temperatureblanket 2026: march. i am a bit behind.
the neon red spot was a 42•C day
😫 i felt it needed a new colour since it’s 10deg out of my range. hopefully the only one 🤞☀️

Colour spotlight: Natural White.
This colour represents 1 to -1⁰C in my knitting project.
It appears most often in the winter months, as well as early spring and late fall.

A section of knitting from a temperature blanket that shows some of the shades used to represent winter.
I always enjoy knitting winter colours because I don't get to work with them as frequently - especially as our winters become shorter.
But some of my favourite colours from this palette are the various shades of blue representing the coldest temperatures!

According to this recent article, in the last decade, some estimates say global temperatures have increased by 0.35°C, compared to 0.2⁰C per decade from 1970 through 2015.
Curious to see how it will show up in my blanket project on a local scale!

Red-headed woman with glasses shows black and white mixed yarn.
It may be March 1st, but every 4 years, the 60th day of the year is Leap Year!
I often get asked how I account for this in my project. Well, I use this black and white mixed yarn.
It also shows when data is missing due to maintenance or equipment upgrades.

Kentville, 1918.
The year had an average daily temperature of 5.9⁰C. The hottest temperature was 32.2⁰C on August 24, and the coldest occurred on February 9, dropping to 25.0⁰C.
A total of 806mm of rain and 188.7cm of snow fell.

The polar vortex in February 2023 was the first easy-to-spot event I knit. Marked by violet yarn, temperatures shifted from average to extreme and back again in just a few days. This is one way that using visual tools can help people understand what the data shows. #temperatureblanket #climatedata
Last month, I finished the 1980s blanket. Each row = 1 day of temperature data from Kentville, NS. I wrote a blog post to share some of the things I've learned so far from this project. Check it out here: www.speakingofclimatechange.com/blog/a-decad... #climatedata #temperatureblanket #novascotia

How long did it end up being and with what weight of yarn? I've been considering this for a while now but I don't know how wide to make it so that the proportions make sense. (deleted and reposted to edit spelling in a hashtag) #crochet #temperatureblanket 🧶
A woman with red hair and a colourful sweater looks uncomfortably at broken knitting needles in the middle of a row.
I don't think the needle wire is supposed to snap mid-row... 😅
Life sure keeps things interesting!

Now, it's mostly a soothing exercise. It's helped a lot with my mental health and been a more positive outlet. Some days I have those "rage knitting" days, but for the most part, I can just focus on the pretty colours, while quieting my brain for a bit. #temperatureblanket #climatedata #mentalhealth
Section of a crochet blanket. The body of the blanket consists of hexagon motifs in colours that represent the daily low and high temperatures with a snowflake overlay for the precipitation (the darker the grey the wetter it was). The blanket has a zigzag border with narrow stripes of each temperature colour - from the coldest out to the warmest (where I had enough of the yarn left of course).
I don't have a photo of the whole thing as I am currently encatted, but my crochet temperature blanket is finished! I've even sewn the ends in and everything!

Over the weekend, I completed the 1980s #temperatureblanket. This blanket represents average temperature data from Kentville, Nova Scotia.
To complete this, it required approximately 50 skeins of yarn and ~400 hours of labour. This is only part of Kentville's climate story.

My personal resolution for 2026 is to be more mindful and optimistic, so I'm starting a Mood Snake! Each day, I'll add a ring of color to correspond with my mood.
