Every now and then a book comes along that is perfect, that chimes with the way I also try to write. #theboyfromthesea by @garrettcarr.bsky.social is just that. Just finished it and I want to let it sink in before anything else. It has a unique narrative voice and beautifully realised characters.

A real joy to see the Heaney Centre packed to the rafters for the launch of Garrett Carr’s brilliant novel #TheBoyFromTheSea
Settings in #TheBoyfromtheSea, number 4: Fintra Beach. “Ambrose walked an hour to Fintra. We had seen him there a few times, pacing back and forth above the beach, the loaded sky beyond.”
Settings in #TheBoyfromtheSea, number 3: “Donegal Bay was murky and yielded nothing easily.” Although, as you can see, it was looking quite pleasant the last time I visited. This Atlantic water is Ambrose's place of work.
Settings in #TheBoyfromtheSea, no. 2: “The Foresters’ Hall smelled of hairspray, tea and the fish scales under our nails.” This is how the Foresters’ Hall looks today. It is where I had my first kiss. It is also where, sometime in the 1960s, Ambrose and Christine first meet in The Boy from the Sea.
