✨Thanks Dr Dolly van Tulleken for the shout out to our work talking to citizens in #TheFoodConversation on BBC Breakfast this morning, in a discussion about how supermarkets can better address food related ill health.

🍊Our work on #TheFoodConversation backs this up and shows that people want government to go even further and restrict all junk food advertising - and are particularly concerned about its impact on children’s health.

As we look back at another big year for FFCC, we reflect on key moments: #TheFoodConversation, the #LandUseFramework and major reports like The False Economy of Big Food and Paying the Price. So much of this work is about identifying blocks to change and understanding how real change happens.

💬 We know through our work with citizens in #TheFoodConversation and the Citizen Advisory Council that this is something people really care about: they know good food can give children the best start in life.

But as Mhairi says, this is not what the public wants. Citizens in #TheFoodConversation can see the unfairness in the system and want their leaders to do much more to tackle unhealthy food, ensure people can support their local farmers and businesses, and hold businesses to account.

👥Our work in #TheFoodConversation shows that people are outraged when they learn about how big companies use marketing to shape what we buy – while working quietly to keep the system locked in the same unhealthy cycle.

Citizens are challenging old assumptions about food 🚨

David, participant in #TheFoodConversation and member of the Citizen Advsisory Council for the Food Strategy, will be speaking at Labour Party Conference later this month, at our event with @foodfoundation.bsky.social & @sustainweb.org 👇

🍎Citizens want to be able to get fresh, local food more easily – a theme we heard loud and clear in #TheFoodConversation.

The Local Food Growth Plan sets out what it will take to scale local food systems: joined-up policy and action across supply chains.

🤝Mhairi brought citizen voices to the discussion, drawing on findings from #TheFoodConversation to interrogate whether the plan reflects what people in Scotland really want from food.

🧠Through #TheFoodConversation, parents like Sophia have described how hard it is to shield children from this. Even when families encourage healthy eating at home, relentless online promotion normalises (and often glamourises) junk food.

📖In our newest Field Guide, #TheFoodConversation participant Sarah explores how Big Food shapes not just what we eat - but the stories we tell about it.

📝 In our latest #FieldGuideForTheFuture, Sarah, a charity manager and participant in #TheFoodConversation, talks about the corporate capture of food and the stories about it – and how fixing food can support both autonomy and connection in our communities.

💡 Through #TheFoodConversation the message has been clear: people want government to act. They want fairer food through joined up policy, including regulation on powerful corporations. And they’re no longer buying into the idea that cheap food is all that matters.

💪 Citizens in #TheFoodConversation want businesses help to account, so that profit doesn’t come before people or planet. Our report with @timjackson.org.uk shows Big Food is a false economy, with unhealthy food costing £268bn every year – almost equivalent to the total annual UK healthcare spend.

The inquiry is also a chance to bring citizen voices to the fore – like Catherine’s, a participant in #TheFoodConversation, who spoke at the Good Food Cycle launch on why it’s so important to involve citizens when designing effective, inclusive food policy.

Cathie, a participant in #TheFoodConversation, and Hasan, a @foodfoundation.bsky.social Food Ambassador, both spoke about the critical role citizens can play when it comes to designing effective, inclusive food policy.

🗣️ As #TheFoodConversation participant Nat says: “I think that government needs to put more focus on nutrition, on healthy living, and to recognise that early intervention in food policy can have massively positive impacts later down the line from a health perspective.”
