New York at the beginning of the 20th century.
Yes, it was as sad at the end as I remembered.
The cinematography was very painterly. The colors & the positions of the actors in certain scenes, very evocative of paintings from that time.

There was a blu-ray made in 2016. But, I can't find any clips from it, so I don't know how well that version came out.
