Black and white photograph of university of Wyoming student Matthew Shepard who died 27 years ago today. An openly gay man, he was the victim of a hate crime which was the subject of huge media attention across the USA. His horrific murder caused a change in hate-crime laws in the USA to include crimes motivated by a victim's actual or perceived gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability.
The story is compassionately told in the stage play The Laramie Project based on the collected testimonies of over 200 people interviewed in and around his hometown of Laramie, Wyoming and Colorado where he was cared for in the final days before his untimely death.

Today marks the 27th anniversary of the tragic death of openly gay student Matthew Shepard, in the small town of Laramie, Wyoming USA.

His horrific murder by 2 local men of similar age was rightly determined a hate crime and precipitated a change in US federal law.

Today was our first full rehearsal putting the first part of Act 1 of #TheLaramieProject on its feet! I’ve got a stage of 25 young actors: it took me a bit of time to work to get the stage pictures I wanted (harder than I anticipated), but we have a way forward. The cast is doing phenomenal work!

Devising and Moment Work with Barbara Pitts McAdams YouTube video by Theatrefolk

I’m enjoying the @theatrefolk.com podcast episode with Lindsay Price and Barbara Pitts McAdams, where Barbara talks about Moment Work (and #TheLaramieProject) and devising theatre beyond sole focus on a script.

As a local AZ theatre artist and arts journalist, the situation at CCHS infuriated me, so this is a wonderful update.

There’s A LOT of work to be done here, but it’s good to know that the arts scene here will fight for what is right.

#TheLaramieProject is perfect 2020 theater:
- the rare socially distant play
- explores the toxic forces that still divide Americans, and those that still bring us together
