The Seep was an eerie, dripping alien invasion that beautifully portrayed grief in the strangest of circumstances.

The Seep by Chana Porter

A delightfully bizarre little book. The audiobook narrator did an incredible job with all the different voices; they absolutely brought this story to life.

I was reminded of A Psalm for the Wild-Built, but The Seep does a much better job of integrating its philosophical leanings into the storytelling. This was charming, meditative, and thought-provoking, with an odd assortment of believable characters and no clear right or wrong answer for how to exist in this strange new world that is, like all utopias, utterly ambiguous.

A very enjoyable read, and I suggest listening to the audiobook for this one!

This was so weird. I loved it.

“I hope,” she said slowly, “that you are loved exactly the way you always wanted to be loved.” Because I love you, so so much, she thought but didn’t say. And I always will. #TheSeep #ChanaPorter

She floated, adrift in a swirl of thoughts. She thought back to the war paradigm of the old days. Things are better now, she thought fiercely as tears welled in her eyes. Things are better, even though I’m so fucking broken. #TheSeep #ChanaPorter

That tightness returned at the back of her throat, choking her with the thick, hard feeling of displacement, of being in the wrong place with the wrong person. #TheSeep #ChanaPorter

Maybe she was like that, too, a relic from another time, unable to exist in the framework of the new. Stubborn, useless, unwanted. #TheSeep #ChanaPorter

I am all the things I don’t know. Everything is unfolding as it should, and that doesn’t mean I can’t be mad about it. #TheSeep #ChanaPorter

She wanted to learn how to speak again, perhaps in another language, in a land far away from the wounds of her past. #TheSeep #ChanaPorter

I can finally, safely say that I have no idea what’s coming! I don’t know if this is the end of life as we know it, or the beginning of a grand adventure, or perhaps both. All I have is my uncertainty. And really, that’s all I’ve ever had. Everything else was a lie. #TheSeep #ChanaPorter

"Lately,” she said, “I’ve felt as if I’ve been living in the wrong timeline. I’ve become numb, like I’m watching my own life as a movie, that is, when I’m not filled with rage or tremendous grief or crippling depression.” #TheSeep #ChanaPorter

How have we never met before? they asked again and again, but what they were really saying was, How have I only just begun to love you? #TheSeep #ChanaPorter

Be present. Eventually, the conversation will flow to other things—typically, to The Past and How Great It Was, Even Though We Didn’t Know It at the Time, and The Future, that shimmering, mercurial beast, constantly breaking our hearts. #TheSeep #ChanaPorter
