At the precincts of Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. A special Bonbori illustrated by ZUN was displayed along the approach. On the left, Hakurei Reimu in her shrine maiden outfit with a red ribbon says, “Hey! Marisa, what have we been waiting for since this morning?” On the right, Kirisame Marisa, in her black witch hat, replies, “What else, Reimu? I’m waiting for the cool evening breeze!” Bonbori are traditional Japanese lighting fixtures surrounded by four sides of Japanese paper to protect them from the wind, with candles or oil burned inside to provide light. This traditional Bonbori Matsuri (Japanese Paper Lantern Festival), held since 1938, lights the shrine with around 400 hand-painted lanterns by notable artists.
