Since we added an Arts & Culture Liaison, we’ve seen the power of connection open doors for organizations and families. The #FY26Budget includes a Faith-Based Liaison to deepen ties with those pillars in our community to unlock resources and new opportunities. #TheWorkContinues

Since 2018, our Emergency Management & Homeland Security has expanded its reach from the Mississippi to the Smokies. They are answering every call to save lives & deliver aid. Last year, we gave what’s probably the largest wage increase in the history of Shelby County Government. That’s not enough. This budget proposes that we invest $3.4M so that Shelby County Government can formally adopt a $40,000 minimum yearly pay for full-time employees. #TheWorkContinues

We continue our historic commitment to construct 2 new high schools. In addition, the budget also makes an operational investment in the eight municipal schools totaling $427 million.  #TheWorkContinues

This budget proposes expanding access to healthcare through our free healthcare program, ShelbyCares. Since 2023 the program has helped decrease obesity and blood pressure in its clients. This budget proposes that we expand access to Raleigh next. #TheWorkContinues

I propose no additional use of fund balance in this budget. This budget only spends what we take in. Shelby County recently received some of the highest credit ratings for a local government in the U.S. We received Aa1 credit ratings from Moody’s and AA+ S&P. #TheWorkContinues

For FY26, we will contribute $100 million to the pension fund. This investment helps smooth out some of the underperformance prior to 2018. We must ensure the stability of our pension fund so that our retirees can rest easily in the time that they have earned. #TheWorkContinues

For the 7th year, this budget has no property tax increase. I’m the only Shelby County mayor, Democrat or Republican, in decades to have never proposed a property tax increase. I propose we cut the property tax rate this year. From $3.39 to $2.73. #TheWorkContinues

We anticipate more federal cuts to programming on the horizon. We recognize we will be asked to do more. Our budget is always lean, but considering the changes in Washington, we have prioritized opportunities to step up and step into the gap of the $1.7B budget. #TheWorkContinues
