SPOLIA IN THE PELAGIAN BASILICA, REUSED 578-590 CE. S. LORENZO FUORI LE MURA Pope Pelagius II, in deciding to build a proper basilica ad corpus (atop the gravesite) in the late C6, had to compete with the grandeur of Constantine's adjacent covered cemetery. He did so by using dazzling spolia. From the entrance (now the back of the church) on forward are four sets of C2 fluted columns in pavonazzetto with their original Composite capitals, and one pair of half-fluted columns in white marble with capitals from c. 200 CE, probably from the Baths of Caracalla. Here we see one of these capitals, carved with trophies of armour and Victories. The trabeation between the columns is from different buildings, C2-C3, matching across the nave and richly carved with acanthus curls and other decorations. Above, the columns of the women's gallery also match across the nave, ending with a pair of splendid spiral-fluted columns toward what would originally have been the altar.
