Kathryn Woodman Leighton, American artist born 1876 through 1952. The title of this painting is wife and child of Bull PLUME, around 1925. Oil oil on canvas. This portrait of Maggie Bull Plume depicts a tender moment between her and one of her children. She was born into a tribe of the Blackfeet nation in Northwestern, Montana. She was married to an important Blackfeet leader. Blackfeet mothers typically carried infants over their shoulders like this with a blanket draped around both mother and child. This artist painted numerous portraits of indigenous American leaders. In the summer of 1926, the great Northern railroad hired her to paint the black feet in glacier national Park, Montana to boost tourism in the area. Art critics and the black feet community commended this artist for her sensitive portrait. A woman with dark hair of indigenous descent from the black feet tribe wear braids in an earring with a child draped around her neck. The child’s arm and hand rest on one side and the child’s head on the other with the child’s hair falling down the mother’s shoulder. A blanket with an argyle type style design embodies the pair. The colors of the blanket are purple, a dark purple, and a pale yellow, with a mint green stripe around the square squares. The woman wears a lapis blue top, and her braids hang down her front. It looks like she is sitting on a deep purple blanket, perhaps against a wall, that leaves a shadow from behind. This painting is on display at the Palmer Museum of Art at the Pennsylvania State University main campus.
This is a painting from the Palmer Museum of Art at Pennsylvania State University. It was an image that stayed with me. A mother is carrying her child around her shoulder with a blanket over top. I was there last week to deliver a speech for the State Toastmasters Club.
