Niyo: 'Unc' Harris keeps Pistons even-keeled facing long odds vs. Knicks Detroit — Late Tuesday night, Tobias Harris stopped to take a long look at the fans gathered outside Madison Square Garden. He was standing near the loading dock after Detroit staved off playoff elimination with a 106-103 victory in Game 5 of their first-round series against the New York Knicks. And as Knicks supporters shouted at him from behind crowd-control barriers across the street from the "World's Most Famous Arena," Harris simply smiled and put on a pair of sunglasses, before turning and boarding the team bus. One down, two to go? “The funny thing about this team is, everybody was (saying) it’s a backs-against-the-wall type of mentality,” Harris said after the Pistons had won for the fourth time in five games at the Garden this season. “But this group really loves being around each other. And I think that was one of the biggest things: We don't want this thing to stop.” More: Wojo: With Cade and chaos, Pistons out-sweat Knicks, survive to fight again They made sure of that, forcing a Game 6 back in Detroit on Thursday night by outhustling and outmuscling the favored Knicks in front of their restless home crowd. And while everyone in Detroit’s lineup had a hand in that, from Ausar Thompson’s breakout night and Jalen Duren’s forceful might to All-Star guard Cade Cunningham’s finishing touch, don’t overlook Harris’ role in this Pistons team’s refusal to cry uncle. There’s a reason they call him “Unc,” after all. It’s a nickname the 21-year-old Duren affectionately bestowed on Harris — and fellow vet Tim Hardaway Jr. — earlier this season, a nod to the experience they both brought with them to Detroit, where the young core was coming off a dismal 14-68 season a year ago and a second coaching change in 12 months. Part of the idea then, as team president Trajan Langdon explained it, was to help “keep these guys as even-keeled as possible.” And if you ask head coach J.B. Bickerstaff now, he’ll tell you that’s exactly what has happened. “I mean, I've run out of adjectives about how I feel about Tobias, so I'll just repeat myself,” Bickerstaff said Tuesday night. “He is our safety blanket. He's reliable. He's dependable. He understands what needs to happen in the moment. He's an unbelievable human being, an unbelievable teammate. And he's a fierce competitor.” Bickerstaff paused there, then added with a smile, “You want me to keep going? Is that enough?” 'The right way' Actually, no, it’s not. That’s the point Harris has helped drive home ever since he returned for a second go-around in Detroit, where he spent parts of three seasons (2016-18) earlier in his career. This is also where he met his wife, Jasmine, and those connections made Langdon’s first big free-agent signing (two years, $52 million) relatively easy. “I think most important is he wanted to be here, right?” Langdon laughed back in late September as the Pistons began training camp. But equally important, he says, was the steadying presence the Pistons’ front office and coaches knew Harris would provide, both as “a guy that has been impeccable in terms of his habits and his professionalism” and a player who “does it the right way all the time.” As Cunningham described it earlier in this series against the Knicks, “He always brings a sense of calm to us.” And as Thompson noted Tuesday after the Pistons had held off another late fourth-quarter surge in New York, “When things are going bad, you know, Tobias is the main one to come (remind us), ‘Keep your heads up.’ It’s amazing.” Amazingly consistent, too. Just look at the stats, for starters. Harris is averaging 16 points and 8.2 rebounds per game in this series. In the 11 previous playoff series he’d played over his 14-year NBA career — a total of 61 postseason games, including his first four with Detroit back in 2016 — he’d averaged 16.3 points and 8.2 rebounds. But his impact against the Knicks is far greater than that, as the absence of Isaiah Stewart (knee) means the responsibility of guarding All-Star Karl-Anthony Towns, New York’s 7-foot stretch big, falls almost exclusively on Harris’ shoulders. He has been tasked with difficult playoff matchups in the past, guarding the likes of Jayson Tatum and Pascal Siakam, among others. And though he’s an underrated 1-on-1 defender, the Pistons certainly aren’t counting on Harris — their No. 2 scoring option on many nights — to completely neutralize Towns here. But Harris did win that individual battle in Game 5, as he played a game-high 43 minutes and finished with 17 points (on 13 shots), eight rebounds, two assists, four blocks — including a big one on Towns' turn-around jumper with 2:32 to play — and two steals. Towns did have 17 points and 11 rebounds himself, but he shot just 5-of-14 from the field and was a minus-12 in his 35 minutes on the floor. Raised for the bright lights For the Pistons, it was Harris who hit the big shots to erase an early second-quarter deficit Tuesday night. And it was Harris again who helped create some separation for his team later on, pointing to the stands after he drilled a 3-pointer over the Knicks’ OG Anunoby with 6:01 left in the third quarter. “For us, just battling and fight, that's what our group has been about all year long,” Harris said. “Even at shootaround today, you could feel the energy of a group that has something to prove and wants every part of the action of it and just wants to embrace the opportunity and the moment. And I thought we did a great job of that, coming into this game — coming into the Garden — and just staying composed and focused. We kept saying in the huddle, 'We gotta just find the joy’ in the whole game and stay with it.” More: 'We are still in it': Pistons force Game 6 with win against Knicks After they’d finished this job to stay in this series, someone asked Harris to explain how this young Detroit team had handled the pressure of a must-win game in one of the NBA’s toughest road environments. “No pressure,” he shrugged, before reminding everyone he was a native New Yorker who grew up on Long Island. “You know, my father used to always, on the weekends, drive me into the city to play against city competition — every single weekend as a kid," Harris said. “So being able to go out there and play the sport that I love, and see my parents up there — family and friends — it’s no pressure. It's just a joy now, going out and doing whatever I can to really help the group play and win in any way possible.” Any and every way, on nights like this. And for anyone still wondering about the possibilities with this Pistons team, you might as well start there. jniyo@detroitnews.com This article originally appeared on The Detroit News: Niyo: 'Unc' Harris keeps Pistons even-keeled facing long odds vs. Knicks

Tobias Harris doing whatever is needed to propel Pistons: 'It's all about winning' Detroit — When Tobias Harris signed with the Pistons in July, he knew he was entering an intriguing situation. The Pistons had just concluded their worst season in franchise history, with 68 losses, and the consensus was that Detroit was destined for another losing season. However, Harris saw something more when he signed with the team. He and his father, Torrel, looked at the roster and talent with a sense that the playoffs were a possibility. "That's one thing me, Trajan (Langdon, Pistons president) and my dad joked about, this isn't a rebuild," Harris said. "That was said early on. There was a lot of great talent. Coming into any situation, you don't throw too many expectations that early. But personally, my goal was to make the playoffs and do whatever I could to help the team win." Harris' belief would turn out to be prophetic. The Pistons would embark on a memorable turnaround during the regular season, becoming the first team in league history to triple their win total from the previous year while qualifying for the postseason. Nine months after signing as a free agent, Harris has played a significant role in the Pistons entering Thursday's Game 3 matchup against the New York Knicks with the first-round series tied at 1. He has averaged 20 points on 58.3% shooting from the field, 9.5 rebounds and a block through the first two playoff games. "For me, it is all about winning," Harris said. "My teammates know what to expect from me on a night-to-night basis. They know what I bring to the table. At this time of year, being in the playoffs and playing playoff basketball, it's all about the wins. Whatever is needed, that is what I am here to do. Help lead this group in the best way possible." As a 14-year veteran, Harris has excelled in every role he has been tasked with this season. However, taking the helm as the Pistons' defensive stopper during their Game 2 victory at Madison Square Garden may have been his most impressive contribution. In preparation for Monday night, coach J.B. Bickerstaff sought different ways to enhance the team's defense and came up with an idea. He decided to assign Harris as the primary defender against New York's Karl-Anthony Towns. "He has been huge," Pistons guard Cade Cunningham said. "He always brings a sense of calm to us. We can give him the ball and everything settles down. He does a bunch of everything for us. It has been good to have a guy like him with experience who can make plays." Bickerstaff's adjustment was a stunning change, given that Towns was coming off a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds in the Knicks' Game 1 win. He scored seven points on 3 of 5 shooting in the fourth quarter, which contributed to New York's comeback victory. Given his 6-foot-8 stature, Bickerstaff's decision was even more surprising due to Harris giving up 4 inches to the 7-foot center. But in an attempt to limit the production of the All-Star big man, Bickerstaff believed Harris' physicality and defensive IQ would help Detroit neutralize Towns' play. The decision led to Harris holding Towns to 10 points on 5-for-11 shooting in Game 2. Towns was also scoreless in the second half with three missed field-goal attempts.  "It's his heart and fight," Bickerstaff said. "His intelligence to understand the tendencies and know where your opponent is trying to get to. Tobias is a fighter. He doesn't back down. He takes challenges. I believe he accepted this challenge, and I think he is doing well." Since being drafted as a first-round pick in 2011, Harris has consistently been recognized as a reliable scorer. At times, the reputation has overshadowed his talent as a solid defender. Harris is not focused on proving his abilities to anyone outside the Pistons organization. It's the team that not only gave him a home following his unceremonious exit from the Philadelphia 76ers, but also a franchise that shared the same optimistic view that it could develop into a playoff-caliber team by late April. "I have a story and a journey, but I am also in a fabulous position to be here and to play for this organization," Harris said. "To be in the playoffs this year, extremely blessed and thankful. I couldn't ask for a better situation." coty.davis@detroitnews.com @cotydavis_24 This article originally appeared on The Detroit News: Tobias Harris doing whatever is needed to propel Pistons: 'It's all about winning'
