Hoping to see a #US athlete have a #TommieSmith, #JohnCarlos moment on the podium at these #Olympics. Hold up an #AbolishICE card and be an eternal hero.

Again with the sports thing, if anyone sees this.
It mattered that #JesseOwens ran. It mattered that #JohnCarlos and #TommieSmith raised their fists.
The #Olympic games are coming, and Sports Matters in the World.
Please, if you know any athletes at all, beg them to make a scene.

Today in #LaborHistory 10/18/1968: IOC tried to strip US Olympic medalists #JohnCarlos & #TommieSmith of awards for giving #BlackPower salute. IOC pres Avery Brundage said they violently broke fundamental principles of Olympic spirit. Yet, had no objections to #Nazi salutes during 1936 Berlin games.
More than five decades later, his silent protest still speaks volumes. Whether through raised fists or taking a knee, the fight against racial and social injustice continues.

Peter Norman, vilified and sanctioned for supporting dissent.
“He paid the price. This was Peter Norman’s stand for #humanrights”.
“He just happened to be a white guy, an Australian white guy, between two black guys in the victory stand believing in the same thing.” - #TommieSmith

A photo of a red folding bicycle with a blue-and-gold Ukraine flag hanging from the back seat. The bike is leaning against a low wall and positioned in front of a grassy expanse at San Jose State University, with the iconic Victory Salute statue in the background, depicting U.S. athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos at the 1968 Olympics with fists raised in a Black Power salute to protest racism faced by Black Americans.
Today my bicycle and I sat for an extra moment of pride, shame, and purpose in the company of these symbols of something greater.
