I can't recall if I posted this previously, but last summer we ran into a group of WW II reenactors in Osaka. We didn't share a language, but instead shared photos of our aircraft builds. I showed them my #TonyTonyTony Hien and they had pics sitting in Hien and other cockpits. #HistScaleModels

So, I haven’t given up on #TonyTonyTony and even though I’m past the target, I will complete and post it. In March I suffered a knee injury that has made it impossible to sit at my workbench and haven’t done any model work, but the PT continues and I hope May sees the final product! #HistScaleModels

I was pleased to be able to contribute to the #TonyTonyTony group build led by @jaaaagirr.bsky.social. It was a push to complete my model at the end of the month, but well worth it, and the other efforts were great to see too. Here's to the next one!

It's been fantastic to see the #histscalemodels community come together working on a rather narrow theme.
Very well done you all and thank you again for making this happen 👏👏

Unfinished #tonytonytony update. The night I got the primer on my FiL was taken seriously ill. He's still with us, but only just. So there have been a lot miles to and from my wife's home town/hospital in the last couple of weeks, which stalled all activity. It will be finished.

Well, I missed the deadline for #TonyTonyTony, but I’m not giving up. I’ve been traveling more than expected, which, when combined with my other activities, conspired to limit my availability. BUT I thank you all for getting me back to this. Look for more additions to my thread later this month!

An ALL-NEW view of the completed model Ki 61 'Tony' from the starboard side. It's in a 'museum display' on a shiny floor with blue striped walls behind, a rope barrier, and a group of photographers milling about. This side of the model is fully painted with camouflage and markings, No 24 on the wheel door. Slightly tidier and better lit than yesterday's photo.

Well I said I'd do a couple more pics in better light, with the last couple of details completed, so here they are. (Not that different to the ones before, though!) #TonyTonyTony #histscalemodels

deadline failed... 😅 eventually will be completed...

the topic is interesting, and is a good looking plane, but I found this model tricky like the cockpit between the fuselage halves... looking the tamiya ones seems easier to align all the parts.

#TonyTonyTony is done!

There were a few last minute #TonyTonyTony challenges, inc a piece pinging into the next room, a varnish-paint reaction, and a critical dry fit that stuck... And a few things to tweak, add, upgrade. But it's fulfilled my original idea, so pleased with that. #histscalemodels

With one hour of March still to go, local, my 1/72 Tamiya Ki 61 #TonyTonyTony is done!

I'm happy to add it to the group display, though I'll try and get a couple of better lit pics in daylight tomorrow. Representing a (fictitious) museum example, half in a paint scheme, half anon. #histscalemodels

100% agree. It got me back into modeling. Anyone up for a #DoraDoraDora after #TonyTonyTony ? ( yes, I do have one in the stash, unstarted...) 😀

I really had fun with the #tonytonytony group build for #histscalemodels.
Is there another group build planned?

I found it extremely useful, as having a deadline kept me focused and made me create time for a hobby that I love.

The Kawasaki Ki-61-Id Hien. May 1945.

Tamiya 1/72 straight out of the box (except for tire bulge and antenna wires)

A very unique build that turned my normal process upside down.

Few additional images from my #tonytonytony #histscalemodel build as the clouds obscured a bit. Not perfect by any means but again I had fun and learnt some new skills.

The throttle box is 4mm along the longest dimension, as seen with the steel ruler here. There are five colour callouts. FIVE!

I did my best...

Photo showing the chromed wing piece with the landing light area marked on the instructions (seen underneath) as needing to be painted 'chrome silver'. Double chrome? Is that like double denim?

Well, it's going to be down to the wire, but round one decalling is mostly done, and I'm watching the MicroSol/Set effects with the usual trepidation. Pics later!

In the meantime, I don't *think* need paint the chrome finish chrome. Or do I? #TonyTonyTony #histscalemodels

Had way too little time this month but calling this (pretty much) done. All came together in the last couple of hours. Not perfect and will go back to it but wanna squeeze it in before the end of March. Fun project.

Got excited and threw on a bit of an enamel pin wash. Actually looks pretty good.

The panels take on a lively look with the sparking silver highlights.

Nice brush work on the silver!
My #TonyTonyTony build is still in parts on the workbench. I was looking at doing more work on it this afternoon.

A mix of Humbrol (that’s my generation!) a couple of Revell enamels. Plus some Tamiya acrylics. All brush painted.

Some went over the chrome v well, the Humbrol green did NOT - took three coats! #TonyTonyTony.

Both fuselage sides with the cockpit unit between them laid out, all painted.

An ‘over the shoulder’ shot of the cockpit showing the instrument panel etc with the fuselage all closed up.

A fair amount of research has been done. Stay tuned! Meanwhile, the greenish rather than sand (that was a rabbit hole! Both are right depending on mark/build date, apparently.) cockpit feels like it’s got as many parts as a 1/48th; it’s 1/72. Load of one item colours.

Well, most of March got eaten by other things, but we are on track to slide in (with luck) a completed model just before the deadline!

Good progress recently; lovely engineering on the kit. Parts count and chrome requirements mean keeping it ‘true’ has proven tricky.
