February 19 2019, Torontohenge as seen from the Queen Street bridge over the Don river... the sun is higher in the sky as it crosses the easy-west street grid (effect exaggerated by the higher vantage point relative to the horizon)

even 4 days after February's Torontohenge, you can still get dramatic photos

so keep an eye on that weather forecast ;o)

imagine you are facing west along one of Toronto's east-west-aligned streets... in the spring, as we proceed from the winter solstice towards the spring equinox, the sun sets a little further to the north each day, i.e. to the right, than the day before... this means that it appears over the street a little higher each day after February's Torontohenge

my best Torontohenge picture, taken February 18 2019, looking west along Queen St from Church St, with the sun actually shining right through the elevated walkway between the former Simpsons and the former Eatons -- yes, it's three days after Torontohenge on the 15th, and this is explained in the thread

at 5:47pm tonight in Toronto, the sun will set directly over the east-west street grid, creating an effect known as Torontohenge (named after Stonehenge)

the effect is more dramatic amidst downtown towers

while today is mostly cloudy, check again at sunset the rest of this week

four times a year, the rising or setting sun crosses the horizon directly over Toronto's east-west-aligned street grid, producing an effect named Torontohenge

the next Torontohenge is October 25 at sunset, with good photo opportunities for the week prior

forecast for tomorrow and saturday only partly cloudy

here's a great example showing how good pictures can be obtained in the week or so before the August Torontohenge

tonight's sunset TorontoHenge event will be completely obscured by thick, snowy cloud cover

the good news is that there may still be opportunities for pictures over the next week or so, if we get some sunny breaks

from September equinox to December solstice, the sun sets further south each day, so in the week before October 25, the sun is lined up over the street grid a bit lower each day
