hope that returning to our #traditionalfoods will lead to people taking care of each other again. There is so much trauma in our community, but these seeds have a lovir power that overcomes all of that. And the beautiful thing is that they feed us, and that's one of the ultimate forms of love and care for each other

Three stages of salmonberry ripeness surrounded by salmonberry bushes. Almost rip orange salmonberry on the left and mid photo is ripe orange salmonberry hanging and next to it on the right is a tiny green unripe salmonberry.
Poet selfie in bushes. Woman is holding up a plastic bucket filled with salmonberries. Woman has big net and ballcap on. She is surrounded by bushes. Berries are both ripe and unripe above her head.
Berry picking is my zen!

Juniper cones (not a berry)
These cones that resemble berries can be used to make a tea to enjoy, the flavour can be bitter and astringent, but if one adds a bit of honey, it milds out the harshness. Not a bad tea to try.

Cedar bark basket sits on beach half full of beach asparagus.
Boy bends down over patch of beach asparagus ready to pick it.
Picked some beach asparagus yesterday for dinner! It’s rare to find patches on this side of the island. Got my grandson to help me & taught him about beach greens.

Reminder! 🌱 “It’s a mistake to just bring fiddleheads home and sauté them without the necessary first step. Never put fiddleheads directly in your soup without boiling or steaming them for ten to fifteen minutes and then straining. And don’t eat them raw.”
