Page 3 Panel 1: Yellow and Pika explore an undersea cave with Kabuto crawling around. The scene is illuminated by the lights of Chinchous and Lanturns. Panel 2: Yellow and Pika gaze up in awe at a giant stone tablet with a carving of Ancient Mew. Unown float around them, while off in the distance Suicune stands in silhouette on a tall rock tower, unseen by Yellow and Pika. Panel 3: Yellow and Pika ride a Mantine up from the depths back towards the surface, surrounded by a school of Remoraid. Panel 4: Yellow and Pika walk from the water back to the beach from Page 1 Panel 1, laughing with excitement. It’s sunset and the beach is empty, the Seel are swimming away and the Trainers are going home. The Slowpoke from Page 1 Panel 1 is now a Slowbro, looking very confused, like it’s surprised to have evolved.

Inking digitally I got sucked into an endless loop of constant redraws, so it was a relief to ink traditionally and NOT have that temptation—it also forced me to draw more carefully

Page 2 Panel 1: Yellow and Pika play catch with Azumarills and Marills using an inflated beach ball. Panel 2: Yellow and Pika march in line behind a swarm of Woopers walking across the ocean floor, guided by Quagsires. Panel 3: Yellow and Pika explore a coral reef. Qwilfish, Horsea, and Corsola swim around, bringing Yellow and Pika flowers and stones as gifts. Panel 4: Yellow and Pika riding a Gyarados, it’s swimming very fast and they’re struggling to hold on.

I was nervous about tackling the color since every panel is a complete scene change, but the results show how much my understanding of color palettes has improved over the years 😊

Page 1 of a 3-page color comic in a cartoony art style featuring the character Yellow from the manga Pokemon Adventures, Pika the Pikachu, and many other Pokemon. Panel 1: Sunrise on a beach by the ocean. Pokémon trainers are playing on the shore and Seels are lying on the rocks enjoying the sun. There’s a Slowpoke dipping its tail in the water. Yellow and Pika excitedly run through shallow water towards the ocean. Panel 2: A view under the water as Yellow and Pika dive in. There are Staryu and Shellder floating around and burrowing in the sand, which slopes off to show that the water gets much deeper further from the shore. Dragonair rears back with a BWSHH, lifting Yellow and Pika into the air (both clinging to the fishing rod with its lure still stuck in Dragonair's mouth, then splashes down beneath the surface of the water, still dragging Yellow and Pika behind. Dragonair glares back at them, horn glowing with a VMMMM as it powers up an attack. Yellow lets go of the fishing rod in shock and it flies out of their hands with a SHWIP. Lights mysteriously glow around Yellow as they press a Pokéball to their forehead, telepathically communicating with the Pokémon inside. They think, "...got it? Go!", then hurls the Pokéball to release Omny the Omanyte ready for action.

Omny blasts Dragonair with Water Gun with a FSSH, knocking Dragonair's head back and forcing its Dragon Rage attack to shoot harmlessly into the distance (PSHOO). Pika, glowing with supercharged energy, leaps forward as Yellow telepathically tells it, "Hurry, Pika--knock out the lure!" Pika slams into the side of Dragonair's face with a dramatic THWAK. But Dragonair, unfazed, merely swats Pika away with a SMAK of its tail. Then Dragonair starts swimming in circles, spinning the surrounding water into a whirlpool as Yellow, Omny, and Pika look on in shock.

A black-and-white comic page. Yellow smiles, clenching their fist, then points dramatically in the air, declaring, "Okay! Today we're definitely going to catch a Pokémon!" They're "surfing" a life preserver across the ocean, out from Vermilion Harbor. Yellow's clutching a fishing rod and Pikachu crouches on the float beside them. Yellow rears back, preparing to cast the fishing rod, looking nervous. Yellow murmurs to themself, "All right...if we play it smart, no one has to get hurt...so just stay calm—" The lure at the end of the fishing rod, a Pokéball, splashes into the water. A moment later, Yellow is pulled halfway off the life preserver by a giant YANK on the fishing line. Pika pulls Yellow back, and the fishing rod flies out of Yellow's hands.

An angry Dragonair erupts out of the water with a BLOOSH, then slams its tail down onto the life preserver, breaking it in half (KRUNCH) as Yellow and Pika leap into the ocean. Yellow is treading water, Pika crouching on Yellow's hat, growling and emitting sparks of electricity (ZZT ZZT). Yellow frantically gasps, "Pika, no! The water will conduct the electricity! Try to draw its attention with Quick Attack while I—" Pika has already leapt into the air as they realize Dragonair's horn is glowing, charging up for an attack. PSHOOOOO! Dragonair shoots a laser beam directly at the spot Pika was just in—but Yellow has grabbed Pika's tail and slammed Pika down into the water, both of them going under and holding their breath.

Yellow and Pika surface for air, Yellow thinking to themself, "Dragon Rage? That doesn't make sense—" Dragonair's tail stabs into the water, barely missing Pika, who's quickly yanked out of the way by Yellow with a cry. Yellow and Pika frantically swim away, Yellow thinking, "Dragonair sightings are rare because they usually run away. What would make this one attack so aggressively?" The Dragonair flies into the air, swooping in front of Yellow and Pika, blocking their way. But looking at it head-on, Yellow realizes Dragonair's pulling the fishing rod around with it, the rod's Pokéball lure stuck in Dragonair's mouth. Yellow leaps toward the fishing rod as it whips past, yelling, "Pika! We have to get the lure out of its mouth!"

I try to challenge myself with every #comic , so I went all-out with the action choreography and #lettering (hand-drawn SFX + digital dialogue and balloons)
