#traitorandthewretch has a ton of lore, it was just funnier to let readers wonder. I know how magic works there, but the POV characters don't and that's all that really matters.

I have trade routes, culinary traditions (the potatoes in this medieval-esque setting were intentional), holidays, etc.

Both main characters in #traitorandthewretch have permanent injuries. Knell's are a spoiler, but Percy's isn't.

He tried to betray the Prophesized Hero and lost his dominant hand. The wound was healed, but it's a major adjustment and he has not had time to deal with that physically or mentally yet.

In #traitorandthewretch we see Percy and Knell for the short window of two very intense weeks.

But book 2 will be an exploration of what things looks like *after* the frantic escape is over, and how to navigate what 'normal' is when life so far has been a long series of traumatic adventures.

Technically, neither Percy or Knell were supposed to live past chapter 1.

But to answer the question better, what wasn't to be was the life either of them expected to have before Fate steamrolled their futures.

Oh yes, Percy tries very hard to kill him at the start of the book, unfortunately his rival is the hero of the story so it doesn't go well

There was, in fact, a magical plague! (mentioned very briefly) It's what killed Percy's parents.

Knell's whole situation also counts as a unique illness, yeah? Eldritch god possession that turns your blood black and gives you necromancy powers seems like it should count.

This was such a fun project to knit: a textured body with a customized sleeve design to match the book.

Introducing one of my favorite books of 2025, “The Traitor and the Wretch”, written by Jasmine Walls, Illustrated by Rowan MacColl.

Much like kindness, I like to treat evil as actions a character chooses to take, again and again, until they are irredeemable.

Not all of my antagonists are evil though, but might just have goals at odds with the protagonist.
For #traitorandthewretch the overarching antagonist is a classic hero.

I think it comes down to kindness and trust.

Knell fell for Percy because he kept proving himself kind and caring, even if he wasn't particularly *nice* about it.

Percy fell in increments as Knell flipped (almost) every assumption Percy had about him. He needed kindness too.
