Electric trams have run in Augsburg since 1898. Running on metre gauge tracks, they joined the modern tram world in 1996 with the introduction of low floor trams. The city’s 5 lines converge on the triangular junction station at Königsplatz. #TramTuesday

Seaton Tramway in Devon is a tourist line opened in 1970 that runs through the marshes near the River Axe. It follows part of the former Seaton branch line that was closed in the 60s. It runs scaled-down trams, some rebuilds of originals, some built specifically for the line. #TramTuesday

St Étienne never got rid of its trams. They have run there continuously since 1881. Until 1998, even modern trams used poles to collect current from the wires, before changing to pantographs. A small museum, only open on Wednesday afternoons, celebrates the city’s transport heritage. #TramTuesday

Not a tram! But tram-adjacent… Since 2009, the short branch line from Stourbridge Junction and Stourbridge Town has been run by a pair of Class 139 Parry People Movers. These lightweight single-car vehicles have small engines that run on LPG, and store energy by means of a flywheel. #TramTuesday

Trams have ran in Antwerp since the 19th Century, electric trams since the early 20th. It’s another Belgian city whose 70s metro plans stalled. Instead there are “pre-metro” tunnels running trams underground, with unfinished stations and a tunnel from the 80s due to open in a few years. #TramTuesday

The Great Orme Tramway in Llandudno has been operating since 1902 with its original vehicles. It is a cable hauled funicular, climbing the headland of the Great Orme in 2 sections, the lower one having a small street-running section. It is a tourist tramway, not running in winter. #TramTuesday

After Southport pier’s restoration in 2002, a tram along Britain’s 2nd longest pier was reintroduced in 2005. A 2-car battery-powered vehicle, it ran all year round (except Xmas) before the wear it was inflicting on the pier and rising maintenance costs caused it to be closed in 2015. #TramTuesday

Mulhouse is one of France’s many 21st Century tram networks. 2 lines opened in 2006, followed in 2010 by a 3rd and a tram-train service that runs through the streets before joining the heavy rail line to Thann. Mulhouse is home to the fab Cité du Train, the French National Rail Museum. #TramTuesday
