Taking work on the Sex Info switchboard, Califia joined a lesbian separatist movement from which he was excluded when he spoke for sadomasochism. He explored S/M with lesbians & gay men anyway, co-founding 1st US lesbian BDSM group Samois in 1978.

After the revolution, Robles moved to Iguala, where a group of men are said to have attacked him to reveal his anatomy - he killed two in self-defence. According to a former neighbour, if anyone called Robles a woman or Doña, he'd threaten them with a pistol.
