> a transmedicalist?

Self-identified transmedicalist here to fact-check.

> Typically, they're of the belief that you're only a valid trans if you completely medically transition.

This is a very persistent misconception. Transmedicalism is the “belief” that being transsexual is defined as having the medical need to transition, or having had that need and having transitioned. This “belief” was just common sense before 2015-ish, when transness became picked up as a political, partisan topic, not a personal medical issue.

The Wikipedia article provides a great working definition:

“**Transmedicalism** is the idea that being transgender is primarily a medical issue related to the incongruence between an individual's assigned sex at birth and their gender identity, characterized by gender dysphoria.”

> They tend to shame trans men for example, for wearing bras or frilly clothes.

This has nothing to do with transmedicalism. This is just a response to what seems like self-misgendering.

If a medicalized, passing trans man wore bras or frilly clothes, most people (transmedicalist or not) would probably worry or be weirded out, because he looks like a man, yet he’s wearing women’s clothes.

On the other hand, an unmedicalized, non-passing person showed up in a bra and frilly clothes and decklared themself a trans man, most people (transmedicalist or not) would cast doubt upon that declaration. It has nothing to do with morals or inclusion; it has everything to do with humans, as social creatures, unconsciously perceive other people as masculine or feminine—“If you’re a man, why do you look, sound, and dress like a woman?”

> They tend to pretend nonbinary people don't exist.

Actually, this is not universal among transmedicalists either. Wikipedia says (note the “may also” hedging words):

“They may also exclude those who identify themselves as non-binary from the trans label.”

When you look at /r/truscum and /r/Transmedical, you’ll absorb the fact that some of them believe, at least in theory, that nonbinary people can experience gender dysphoria. Transmedicalists don’t exclude nonbinary people; they’re skeptical of people who talk the talk but don’t walk the walk.

> They don't view being trans as an identity, so much as a medical problem to be corrected with intervention

Being trans was not an identity until a vocal minority on Tumblr made it so, and the Democrats picked out that vocal minority as the new face of trans activism.

Tamzin has a great essay titled _“Is” and “Ought”_ on how trans rights have been slowly progressing before 2015, back when it was a medical issue, understood by “normies” that trans women were women born trapped in a male body; but have recently come to a standstill and backslide because of the identity-ification and politicization of transness, which alienated everyone from staunch right-wing bigots to even slightly moderate leftists.

> that is required to be valid in their eyes.

Transmedicalists tend to disbelieve in “validity politics”; the word “valid” carries no meaning here.

> It's bullshit. I get their concerns, but it's fucking dumb. If fascists didn't have what they view as trans trenders to point at, they'd find something else to oppress us.

Yes, the pushback is constant. No, that doesn’t mean that we should give up refuting that pushback using worldviews and arguments that most people already agree with, not lofty post-genderist ideals.

> All you have to do is look at the recent history of the wedge of trans kids, and then states following up with targetting adults.

We are in a world where most people don’t think “trans kids” exist. In fact, mainstream media, not too long ago, often portrayed trans people as sexual predators (“traps”). Arguing about “trans kids” in this climate was nothing short of political suicide.

We shouldn’t have said “Puberty blockers for trans **kids**!”. We should have said “**Adolescents** who express sex dysphoria should get the treatment they need, as soon as possible safely.”

> No matter how nicely you try to fit into the binary world of trad wives and muscle men, they will will never accept us, and we shouldn't try to conform

Stealth transsexuals have fit into “the binary world” just fine, until “trans visibility” outed them, or coaxed them out of their chosen gender to tell you to stop speaking on their behalf.

#HotTake The “trans umbrella” is a tool to oppress us #transsexual people and belittle our medical need for sex transition.
Being trans isn’t about identity; it’s about access to healthcare that we badly need to live as the sex we were meant to be born as.

The important takeaway here is that outliers don’t form a third cluster. It isn’t that outliers don’t exist, nor that we should discredit anyone who claims that outliers exist. #transrights #transmedical
