This item is a Bamana female figure (nyeleni or jonyeleni) from Mali, a type of collectible African sculpture.
These figures represent ideal female beauty and were used by the Bamana people during initiation ceremonies for young men. Carved from wood, they often feature stylized geometric forms, large conical breasts, and decorative scarification patterns on the torso. Made of wood, these figures typically have a patina of age and desiccation cracks from historical use.

I have not doodled in a few years. I had to do this for a friend after I lost a bet on the Superbowl when the Seahawks came out victorious. So my friend Sena will be getting this from me. It's called "Sena's Tiki Bar."

Bottle with seated figure
Nasca artist(s)
1–300 CE
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 362
Unlike their northern counterparts, who used two-piece ceramic molds for manufacturing vessels, Nazca potters shaped containers by coiling and modeling. Figure vessels like the present example are rare and have an early date in the Nazca ceramic sequence, which lasted for at least 700 years. This engaging polychrome bottle takes the shape of a seated, compact human figure. It has a single spout and strap handle. The large head sits atop the broad shoulders, and the figure's legs are pulled close to the body, with arms and hands held tightly to the chest. Details such as fingers, toes, nails, and facial features are geometricized. The eyes and mouth are slightly raised, while prominent are the nose and a protuberance on the forehead. This mysterious knob may be a reference to fishermen, who are often shown with such a feature. The figure wears a head cover and a striped hipcloth. On his left upper arm is a stylized long-beaked bird, probably a sea bird, and on his right an anthropomorphized fish, perhaps a killer whale or shark. Marine imagery features prominently in all Nazca art, reflecting the economic importance of ocean resources. A source of constant wealth as well as danger, the sea played a major role in myths of all coastal peoples in the Andes.

When this staff finial was made, the Congo was ruled by a rapacious colonial power, Belgium. Belgian rule in the Congo (1885–1960) began with King Leopold II’s brutal, private "Congo Free State" (1885–1908), notorious for atrocities, forced labor, and millions of deaths for rubber profit. It became a formal Belgian colony in 1908, marked by a "colonial trinity" of state, missionary, and corporate control, focusing on resource extraction until independence.
The tribes of the Congo were in turn ruled by their own leaders who demanded regalia to assert their power and authority over others by the use of chief staffs, etc. This is one example of such artwork.

This Wapinyan ancestor figure (Ngwallndu) comes from the Wosera Abelam people residing in the East Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea. Integral to the fabric of the spiritual life of the Wosera Abelam people is the growing and exchanging of yams. Although the primary role of this object is to honor deceased ancestors, every object of artistic production, including this figure, would be displayed at the annual Yam Festival. Produced after a respected elder passes away, this figure would have been kept in the Spirit House (Haus Tambaran) in a prominent place.

Small figures are also made to represent Wapinyan and have been variously identified as "long" yam children, yam spirit portraits, and as specifically named clan ancestors. These may be male or female and are found in Spirit Houses as well as ceremonial yam warehouses. At the beginning of the yam growing cycle, small seedlings are placed against them to encourage "long" yam cultivation, and female figures are said to specifically look after the development of their yam counterparts.

The Elema people of the Papuan Gulf in southeast New Guinea formerly practiced an elaborate cycle of masked rituals. While some mask types were sacred, others, such as this eharo mask, were created primarily for amusement. To the Elema eharo were "maea morava eharu" ("things of gladness"), danced as a prelude to more sacred rituals. Eharo represent supernatural beings as well as humorous figures, such as lecherous old men.
They were made and worn by young men from neighboring villages at the request of the village hosting the ceremony. As they entered the host village, the women pelted them with shredded coconut to neutralize their seductive powers. Now harmless, the eharo danced surrounded by large groups of women to the amusement of the assembled crowd.

An expressive vintage 1960s 70s SIGNED handmade hammered copper enamel Ethnic Tribal design artwork tray. Entirely handmade hand fabricated repoussage (hammered from behind), then given profuse incised markings at front and genuine vitreous enamel! A three-lobed small tray with intricate decoration and colorful enameling, the design looks like tribal art to me but I can't say for sure where or when from exactly! Measures 8-3/8" across by 6.25" by about 1" high at highest points on the rim. Signed at front with artist initials, "SH". No other markings, and I'm guessing that it originally had some kind of sticker to identify the maker or origin. Could have one of those sticker hangers added at back if you'd like to hang it on the wall. I'm listing another similar artwork from the same estate today as well. Excellent vintage condition.

Entirely handmade hand fabricated repoussage (hammered from behind), then given profuse incised markings at front and enameled in bright colors! The figure looks like it has some ethnic tribal ceremonial or ritualistic meaning, and I'm not sure of the exact significance of it but it's striking and beautifully hand crafted! Very brightly colored genuine vitreous enamel throughout! Measures 7" by 7" square by about 1/4" high at rim. Signed at front with artist initials, "SS". No other markings, and I'm guessing that it originally had some kind of sticker to identify the maker or origin. I'm listing another similar artwork from the same estate today as well. Apouéma masks (or apuema, pwemwa, dagak) are traditional mourning masks from the Kanak people of New Caledonia, often representing deceased high chiefs to manage mourning. Created with wood, vegetal fiber, and sometimes human hair, they symbolize the link between ancestors and the living world.

Dong Son culture, centered in Vietnam, spread its influence and trade network across Southeast Asia, reaching even islands near Papua New Guinea through extensive trade of bronze artifacts like drums, tools, and ornaments, showing links to PNG through shared bronze types and trade routes after the Lapita network, with some bronze axes identified as Dong Son-style found in PNG as evidence of this prehistoric exchange.

Many Dongson inspired cultural objects have been found around Lake Sentani, and there is a theory that the interlocking, repetitive scrolled patterning depicted here descends from that artistic tradition. The dish has been carved in the form of a stylised turtle, with the handle representing the head. The turtle, along with the hornbill, frog and varan, are clan ancestors. Unlike purely ceremonial objects, such bowls were utilitarian and were the property of women.

A Kota Obamba reliquary figure is designed to guard the relics (bones) of important ancestors, acting as a spiritual link between the living and the dead in the bwete cult, featuring abstracted heads with prominent coiffures and diamond-shaped bodies inserted into relic baskets. These figures, made from wood with hammered brass/copper, symbolize wealth, lineage, and ancestral protection, playing a key role in clan rituals.
