A wide photograph of a large field under grain crop approaching harvest time. There are hedges and trees in the far distance, under a blue sky decked with wisps of cloud. A wide, low bump is visible in the centre of the field. For information about the barrow - a Scheduled Ancient Monument - look up Historic England list entry 1015440.

'Round barrow 550m north of High Nova Farm,' near #Pickering. Seriously - if you squint at the middle of the shot you can make out a wide, low, bump in the crop (more obvious in person). In its ploughed-out state it is more than 30m across. #TumulusTuesday #NorthYorskshire
📷 my own, from July.

A colour landscape photograph, in sombre tones on a cloudy day. There is long grass in the foreground, long sun-browned, with a distinct mound beyond, grown over with weeds. Though towns are nearby, it seems a long way from anywhere. Pic by me, August 2022.

'Windmill Hill', just south of Newton Common, Earlestown. It is reputedly a burial mound, though it may well have been used for a windmill later. It's atmospheric spot, overlooking the Sankey Brook, which is a historic local boundary. #LoveNLW #StHelens Borough #Landscape #Lancashire #TumulusTuesday

One for #tumulusTuesday - this is Rolley Low near Longstone Moor in the Peak District, with a sheep for scale. Probable Bronze Age round barrow with the remains of a dry stone wall extending across it - @derbyshirearch.bsky.social

Ok one question for #TombTuesday (#TumulusTuesday), some Sussex barrows have the place name element Burgh attached to them, why?. While many of the actual 'forts' became Burys the Barrows stayed as 'Burghs': The Black burgh, Hunters Burgh, The Burgh, 4 Lords Burgh, 5 Lords Burgh.
