A quick #TyphoonTuesday thread on Operation Varsity that was launched #OTD in 1945.
For 2TAF's Typhoons, anti-flak operations were the order of the early part of the largest single-lift airborne drop in history.
Do carry this out, cluster munitions were the order of the day.

A later than planned #TyphoonTuesday!
@navalairhistory.com takes us through the Hawker Tornado and Typhoon prototypes in a free article on our Patreon. Matt describes the changes each underwent and how they were used in the development of the Typhoon II.

A Hawker Typhoon of 439 Squadron RCAF, armed with two 500lb bombs, splashes through puddles at B.78 Eindhoevn in March 1945 on its way to the runway. On her wing sits an Erk helping the pilot find their way. Image: Libraries and Archives Canada/DND PL-42101_
As I haven't done a #TyphoonTuesday in ages and as I look out the window at the rain slashing down, here is the classic shot of a sodden B.78 Eindhoven with a 439 Squadron RCAF Typhoon wading out to the runway, being guided by an Erk on the wing point the way.

Three Canadian fighter pilots stand together wearing their flight suits and helmets, holding their parachutes, inspecting a piece of Me262 fighter-bomber that had lodged in the first pilot's wing. Left to Right: F/F Lyall Shaver, S/L James Beatty and F/O Hugh Fraser. The Me262s that were shot down were Oblt. Hans-Georg Richter in 9K+BN W.Nr.170068 and Gefr. Werner Witzmann in 9K+HM W.Nr.110571 of 5./KG 51. Shaver and Fraser had just formed up at 7,000' after attacking a train when they spotted the Me262s 4,000' below them. Shaver and Fraser rolled in and attacked. Shaver fired from 100 yards and missed, before trying again at 50 yards, where he scored hits and the Me262 exploded. Fraser got to within 100 yards of the second Me262 and scored hits, firing again at 50 yards as he overshot the 262 and he pulled up. Looking back, he saw the Me262 crash and burn.
For #TyphoonTuesday, here is F/L Lyall Shaver, 439 Squadron RCAF, showing off the chunk of the first Me262 shot down by a Typhoon (on 14 Feb 1945) that lodged in the wing of MN144 to S/L James Beatty and F/O Hugh Fraser, who shot down a 2nd Me262 that morning.

As it is #TyphoonTuesday, why not have a bit more of Moe and Jackie messing about with their 439 Squadron RCAF mates in April 1944.
Here we have Jackie applying the "Mortimer Snerd Special" to Moe and Moe awarding Jackie, as Mussolini, the "Debert Cross".

Buble top Typhoon above the clouds. Grey/green camo over light grey undersides. Sky Type S spinner and fuselage band. Chrome yellow ID strip painted on wing leading edges. I'm guessing a 4-blade prop.
Washed out shot in air.
Guessing fresh from the factory.

Typhoon on an airbase on the continent? PSP matting used to keep aircraft and crews out of the mud on freshly built expeditionary airfields 1944-1945.
Good looking color photo.
I think it's late war.

Typhoon in flight, shot from amidships of a Halifax bomber (I think).
Not sure if this is the same photo shoot.

A large low wing, single seat, monoplane with an inline water cooled engine, and black and white stripes underwing. Four cannon protrude from the wing leading edge.
Handsome in flight...

Late war bubble top Typhoon as the object of a unit inspection? I didn't think the 3-blade prop was still in use later in the war.
A bit of a brute, she became invaluable in ranging ground attack missions.
Armed with cannons and rockets, I'm reminded of the P-47.

The RAF added identification stripes early on, due to eager AA gunners shooting at anything resembling an FW-190.
They'd receive standard D-Day invasion stripes in June of '44.

A couple of dozen RAF personnel perched upon a Typhoon on a turf strip.
Hawker built a sturdy beast for this requirement.

Earlyish Hawker "car-door" Typhoon.
Kinda late to start this, but I found a couple of nice pics for #TyphoonTuesday...

I've taken many pictures of the #Typhoon in my time, but my rainy abstract from 2011 (left) is one of my favourites. I recreated it last year (right), but I think I still prefer the original.
Your opinion?

The 2025 #RAF #Typhoon display schedule was released today, so it feels fitting to have a picture of ‘Moggy’, the 2024 display jet.

In 2006, Hary Hardy spoke to the Royal Canadian Legion's mainly bomber pilots in White Rock, BC, about his time flying the Hawker Typhoon and his Pulverizers.
You can watch Harry describe his experience in our video here: youtu.be/4LXDacpBH30

Radio Canada photographed F/L Harry Hardy DFC for the interview he gave in the autumn of 1944, in which he described his experience, which you can hear as part of the video presentation you can watch on our channel.
#OTD in 1945, F/L Harry Hardy DFC flew the last of his Pulverizers, RB389 'Pulverizer IV', for the first time. He took IV up for an air test and a mooch around the front lines before flying his 87th Op with 440 Sqn RCAF, leading an attack on V-1 storage sheds near Rotterdam.

#OTD in 1945 was "Black Sunday" for the Jagdwaffe, as the Allied Air Forces mounted major operations. The Allies claimed 238 victories against the Luftwaffe, which reported losing 176 aircraft.
P-47s also shot down two Typhoons with the loss of a pilot, 247 Sqn's F/S Dudley Horn.

The then-Group Captain William de Goat is likely begging a cigarette from a 609 Squadron Typhoon pilot at RAF Thorney Island in spring 1944, with rocket-firing Hawker Typhoons in the background. Image: IWM (CH 13341) - Original wartime caption: Among the many great successes of the new British rocket-firing planes, was the destruction of enemy radiolocation installations just before the airborne landings on France on 6th June 1944. "Group Captain" William B. Goat, mascot of a front line rocket Typhoon Squadron. He likes cigarettes and is seen begging for one.
This is your semi-regular reminder that in November 1943, the RAF invited John Steinbeck, who was writing for the New York Herald Tribune, to inspect its crack Hawker Typhoon unit, 609 Squadron, at RAF Manston...
...He ended up writing about their goat.

Hawker Typhoon JP440 of 184 Squadron RAF before their conversation from Bombphoons to Rocket Firing Typhoons, c. spring 1944. JP440 would survive the war, being scrapped in late 1945.
I haven't done a #TyphoonTuesday in ages and today would be "the most tragic" in 184 Squadron's history.
#OTD 3 Dec 1944, six 184 Sqn Typhoons departed B.80 Volkel in Holland for RAF Warmwell in Dorest for rocket practice.
It would be a flight that would cost 183 5 Typhoons and 3 pilots.

Last Tuesday when I made a #tankertuesday post I was told that it’s actually #typhoontuesday, so today I have some Typhoons of the Italian Air Force to share. I still reserve the right to make Tanker Tuesday posts in the future however 😂 #eurofighter #typhoon #airplanes #avgeek
I'll add both #TyphoonTuesday and #TropicalTuesday to cover the bases
