Yes, more progress on journals than books for sure. Here’s an extract from a deck Chris Bennett their Commercial Director shared at #UKSG2024
#UKSG2024
Had the pleasure of hearing a breakout session on this topic from @scholtom.bsky.social and Elaine Sykes at the @uksg.bsky.social Conference this year #UKSG2024 - This topic is especially relevant to #libraries in a time of budget pressures; do tune into this webinar to find out more! #openaccess
Back to the day job after the whirlwind of #UKSG2024.
Lots of thoughts about new products and services - particularly from the people who were very chill about trying to sell me things 😉
I've got a whole bunch of writing to do - for UKSG, CILIP and Karger.
And then there's the pile of emails!
A small sloth plushie is crawling across the top of a lego Millennium Falcon
Help! A giant sloth is attacking the Millennium Falcon! (I am having too much fun with my sloth plushie from Emerald at #UKSG2024)
3 x 3 boxes which say Lawful good: book ribbon Neutral Good: Sentence pointer Chaotic Good: Scrap paper Lawful Neutral: Ebook True Neutral: Bookmark Chaotic Neutral: leaf Lawful evil: memorising page number Neutral evil: book face down Chaotic evil: Dog ear
We were talking at #UKSG2024 breakfast this week about D&D alignment, and about how I categorise myself as Chaotic Neutral. This chart (from bookstr) made me laugh 😂
We had a great time at #UKSG2024 in Glasgow. Great to catch up with old connections and make new ones. Hopefully see you next year!
Two women in front of lots of stalls in an exhibition. On the left, one has dark, curly hair while the one on the right has straight, blonde hair. Both are wearing glasses and smiling.
Tasha and Sian are heading home after a great three days at #UKSG2024. Thank you for all the great conversations and all the interest in and support for COUNTER in the panel discussions Tasha was part of and on the show floor. See you next year!
Speaker now talking about "when you follow your bliss, doors open".
Yep. I was a biologist, not the final path for me there & not lots of opportunities. Shift the knowledge I gained there to libraries & opportunities have appeared.
Really happy with where I am these days.

Q: "If you viewed your feelings as a map how would your life be different?"
I've made many decisions based on feelings - working in USA, quiting 1st PhD, starting another (where I met my wife), retraining as a librarian.
I'm impulsive, I don't think following my feelings is my problem! #UKSG2024
Speaker asked "If you died today, what would you regret not having done".
My answer: I guess going to Australia (I'm half Australian & never been), but other than that I've got nothing.
There are some things I've done that I regret though... 😂
#UKSG2024
Plenary talk about being your authentic self...sometimes I think I'm a bit too authentic 😂
#UKSG2024
After my #UKSG2024 panel, about why & how open infrastructure adds value to the knowledge community, @scholarlykitchen.bsky.social kindly shared an interview about all things @countermetrics.bsky.social (and what wakes me up at night!)
It's always fun going to sessions about things I'm skeptical of, like this on author identities Metadata. My thought is always, at some level, do I want all my marginalised identities in an easily accessible list if the Nazis (or similar) come? #UKSG2024
Picture of a slide of a city at twilight, a cat sticking its heads out a window, a person falling head first, & a desk, chair, and books on shelves.
#UKSG2024 which image do you find the most engaging?
#UKSG2024 has been wonderful yet again. From the excellent ChronosHub day (super nice to meet all those folks) through to invigorating breakouts & a great response to our plenary.
Accrued several more invites & leaving feeling exhausted but positive.

Question/point from @ruthejh.bsky.social saying that we need to take a risk and support these organisations. It might not be an immediate benefit, have to look towards to the future too! #UKSG2024
ITHAKA report just cited in panel: 'The Second Digital Transformation of Scholarly Publishing', sr.ithaka.org/publications published earlier this year #UKSG2024
Two colleagues from De Gruyter Brill stand either side of a "Spin to Win" wheel, featuring different pieces of merchandise as prizes. "De Gruyter Brill begins here," the placard reads. Behind, we can see the De Gruyter Brill booth at UKSG conference.
Last day at #UKSG2024. Come meet our stellar sales team at booth #34! Talk us through your needs, or just come along to spin and win. Every spin a win!

Session is really invigorating. Esp. in a space with many commercial folks (also essential part of the infrastructure) - often talk a good game about wanting community driven & open standards/infrastructure. But are we really supporting this?
I will be thinking about what I could do. #UKSG2024
The theme of this session on evaluating Read and Publish agreements is that we're all aware that these deals push our authors to big publishers with unsustainable models of OA, but no one actually has the money to do anything else, so..... Hopefully we'll finish with some primal screaming #UKSG2024
Tasha being very transparent about the shoestring that COUNTER is running under. If we value this work, we need to help support it.
#UKSG2024
Just to connect this to a talk I went to previously - often some amount of this volunteer work can be done during your employment time.
Depends a bit on your role & your boss. But if your boss is like me, we value work that supports the community.
#UKSG2024
Tasha (Counter) says that volunteers are almost as important as monetary contributions. There isn't much paid staff resource in projects like this.
#UKSG2024
Thought this slide stood on its own without any commentary from me!
Text of image: Keystone organisations support libraries
- Gathering information & data
- Creating standards
- Providing services
- creating communities
- Being transparent
- Values alignment
#UKSG2024
Now at a session about Keystone small infrastructure bodies e.g. COUNTER, DOAJ.
Tasha says they're little and discrete...
#UKSG2024
Good point made in this plenary is that lots of people wave away dodgy use of genAI by saying "but that's not what it's meant to be used for"
- problem is that people always use tools for what they aren't meant for!
#uksg2024
LLMs are like people. When you ask someone a question multiple times, they will give slightly different answers each time. #UKSG2024
Speaker is librarian & historian - when she talks to data scientists, explanations can be too complicated.
Better to simplify & understand that. Simplified version of LLMs (current gen AI tech) is it is about probability, what's the most likely next word? #UKSG2024
Third day plenary chaired by Rob Johnson. Generative AI: between convenience and academic integrity.
Still quite a lot of AI at this conference, but it hasn't been overkill!
