Raise fuel duty with immediate effect to raise income for critical services In 2000 fuel duty on petrol was 49p/litre. Since then inflation has run at 90% but fuel duty has lagged and currently sits at 53p/litre. If fuel duty had kept pace with inflation it should stand at 93p. Raising the duty by 40p in line with inflation would raise an additional £18 billion/year. Benefits of duty rise will include: 1. Providing a significant source of revenue for public services 2. Making active travel more economically attractive, with concomitant health gains for the population. 3. Reduced vehicle use resulting in the environmental improvements of better air quality, and quieter, cleaner, less congested cities and motorways. It is requested that the Chancellor immediately prioritise an increase in fuel duty for increasing government revenue.
