Afternoon discussions at #UNFF20 was on monitoring, assessment, and reporting in light of a looming deadline for voluntary national reports. It was stressed that the quality of the 2026 Global #Forest Goals Report depends on the quality AND quantity of submissions. Last time, they only received 52.
In a #UNFF20 panel on the importance of a global hub on #data, information, & knowledge on #forest financing opportunities, panelists highlight that altho “the data is there”, accessing it is difficult due to source/type fragmentation.
During #UNFF20 discussions on means of implementation, South Africa stresses that “we cannot hope to increase the pace of implementing the #UN Strategic Plan on #Forests without the provision of new and additional resources.
At #UNFF20 delegates begin the day with a Secretariat announcement that the impasse on establishing a new office for the Global #Forest #Financing Facilitation Network in Beijing is close to being resolved, 7 years after the office was first proposed. Responses from the floor was mixed.

Noting at #UNFF20 that “forests are vital not only for biodiversity, but also the climate, food security, the economy, & community wellbeing,” Jamaica called for forest governance that focuses on ecosystem restoration, sustainable livelihoods, & participatory approaches.
At #UNFF20 discussions, some parties celebrate increases in #forest cover & highlight efforts to enhance #traceability to ensure legality of timber products to tackle illegal logging & trade. Many called for more financing to developing countries to scale up sustainable #forest management efforts.
“Every hectare of #forest lost moves us away from the #sustainable future we seek,” cautioned UN General Assembly President Philemon Yang in opening remarks at #UNFF20.
In opening remarks at #UNFF20, Chair Ismail Belen (Türkiye) stressed the need to invest in “healthy #forests,” and encouraged participation from all types of forest owners, including smallholders, Indigenous Peoples, and women and youth.
