A group of motorists bound for Maine stop at the toll station at the Old Portsmouth Toll Bridge before crossing the Piscataqua River into Kittery, circa 1915. This early toll bridge, maintained by the Boston & Maine RR, was located near where the Sarah M. Long Bridge (also known as the "Middle Bridge") now stands. The car in the photo is believed to be a 1913-1914 Stanley touring car. It appears as though the toll attendent (with hose, left) has paused in her task of washing down mud off the platform to fill the steamer's water tank.
