In San Francisco this week & sadly did not make up in time to attend #unthanksgiving sunrise service of remembrance on #alcatraz
This @aljazeera.com article gives a great overview of the tradition & complicated landscape of #indigenous + national parks lands + current politics

Today is a good day to remember you are on Native Land. #DayofMourning #Unthanksgiving
Today, we join our Indigenous relations across CA on Unthanksgiving Day, a National Day of Mourning; and yet a celebration of Indigenous resistance to colonialism.
We must end colonizer accounts of our history that whitewash the genocide of indigenous people.

Black and white photo of a giant Halloween skeleton in an apartment building’s front yard, appearing to reach out menacingly toward any passersby, a chain dangling from one wrist. It’s almost as tall as the tree behind it, which has a regular-sized skeleton draped over a lower branch.
Photo of the same skeleton as the previous image, but dressed in a Pilgrim’s black hat and robes and holding an inflated balloon shaped like a turkey leg. The image is in black and white except for the brown turkey leg and the reddish ribbon around the hat.
A giant #skeleton in my neighborhood, as seen on October 31 — and the day after. One version is, of course, a reminder of death and destruction; the other is a naked Halloween skeleton. #Unthanksgiving #NationalDayOfMourning

Aux États-Unis, Thanksgiving est un jour de rassemblement familial incontournable. Mais, ce même jour, les Amérindiens tiennent à rappeler ce qu’ils ont subi à cause de l'arrivée des Européens, c’est Unthanksgiving Day.

In this cartoon by Brad Guigar, a turkey sits in bed next to an escort who says: "Not the weirdest request I've gotten, but the cranberry sauce is gonna cost extra."
Happy Unthanksgiving! 🦃
It’s May 28—the calendar opposite of Thanksgiving.
No family drama. No side dishes. Just one turkey livin’ his truth.

Today, we honor #Unthanksgiving and the #NationalDayOfMourning—a time to reflect on Native resilience and truth. While many celebrate, let’s also confront the ongoing impact of colonization and uplift Indigenous voices, stories, and sovereignty. Healing begins with honesty.
a poem written in black and white on a white background: my shadow, ‘tis of thee we live on occupied land commonly called these United States of America tell me why why do we coddle the ego of a nation born of genocide born of land theft raised with slavery, supremacy and the granddaddy of them all colonial capitalism why do we shield a nation from its shadow but to shield us from our own shield us from decolonizing holiday tables giving up our seat at the table rewriting the fable whitewashed history let’s get honest we can honor the past without being in bondage to it this is the real shadow work - ls

Also, de-homed by this country and, effectively, given to corporations who denied their humanity, as official and repeated acts of Congress, throughout most of the 20th century. Small wonder that the people of the land are preyed upon by those whose way of being is to exploit both.

I’m honored to be part of the #IndigenousPeople sunrise ceremony @Alcatraz with my husband & kids. Brushing shoulders with @Kaepernick7 & @mrdannyglover was nice too. Their support brings awareness. I cried a lot during ceremony to respect those lost. #unthanksgiving
We, with thwo kids under 9, made it on the 5:00am @AlcatrazCruises to attend the Indigenous people ceremony on #alcatraz. Lines were super long which shows the commitment of so many. #unthanksgiving #NativeAmerican
