Cropped image of an article in the student newspaper 'The South Westerner' entitled 'What a bleating nuisance!' 'Sheep Disturb Exam Work'. A black and white photograph shows a view of the Old Library, the Roborough (former library) and Chapel, taken from the Hoopern Valley, and featuring a lamp in the foreground. The text underneath reads: 'Larry the Lamb is Exeter students' latest revision aid. He, the other ninety ewes and thirty-four lambs are disturbing the peace of many students still working for exams in the University and Roborough Library. Many students have complained of the noise from the flock of sheep now grazing in the Hoopern Valley, opposite the libraries. The land is rented by the University to a tenant farmer, Mr. Alan King of Matford Park Farm, Exminster. Previously there were kept at the County Showfield at Whipton, but while the show was on and the grass used for stands grows again the flock have been moved to the valley. A second year Theology student, Peter Clark, said: "It's much worse in the Roborough. I spend much of the day there and there is noise from the sheep almost non-stop. I don't mind a bit of mutton on Sundays, but lamb all the week is monotonous." Unfortunately, Prince of Wales Road alongside the valley is also signposted as an "HR" - holiday route - for tourists to miss the worst traffic. Some students have reported narrowly missing sheep which have wandered on to the road. The flock of Border Leicesters crossed with Suffolks may be moved before the heaviest traffic builds up. Yet the traffic itself is also becoming a noisy nuisance for students revising for exams.'
With exams underway at Exeter, this week we're enjoying this exam season throwback from our student newspapers! 🐑
Good luck to everyone taking exams - we hope no sheep disturb your revision in the library!
