New Series of Gatherings for Language Content Creators Each gathering will be hosted by a different content creator who will lead a discussion on their language-based social media topic.

Very cool looking program from the Smithsonian Language Vitality Initiative:

Online gatherings for Indigenous language content creators to support & learn from each other

Felipe closed out by reading some of his poetry! You can also hear this poem Gyec Muly sung by Emily Drummond, with music by Kathryn Goldberg (both @BrynMawrCollege alums) https://kathryngoldberg.weebly.com/projects.html #ZapotecoColonial #UsaTuVoz

For Felipe, the "real question" is how to take language activist outside of academia — how to involve the younger generation and revitalize the language

In 2016, he started collaborating with a local high school to get kids tweeting in Zapotec!

Our final short talk is from @DizhSa — another member of the @TichaProject board & a postdoc at Haverford

He noticed language shift in his community and started working with linguists in the 90s to write, document, & teach San Lucas Quiaviní Zapotec!

Esta semana aprendí:

En el #zapoteco de Tlacochahuaya, hay dos variantes de expresar el pasado (marcadores del aspecto completivo), "b-" y "u-", p. ej. "Jwany bzah / uzah", 'Juan comió'. La variante "b-" no es tan común y es posible que se la usa más en el barrio alto. #UsaTuVoz

Something I've learned about (Tlacochahuaya) #Zapotec:

Many verbs have two past (perfective aspect, prolly) variants, "b-" and "u-", e.g. "Jwany bzah / uzah", 'Juan ate'. The "b-" variant is less common, and maybe more used in the "upper" barrios of town. #fieldwork #UsaTuVoz

I think "ti+aspan+a" is likely "habitual+verb+1s", but I don't know what "aspan" means

Creo que "ti+aspan+a" es "habitual+verbo+1s", pero no sé que significa "aspan"

"I XX my dog", "yo XX mi perro"

In #Zapotec, <budy> = 'chicken', <cyer peluc> = 'bald-necked', and <xnia> = 'red' -- so a chicken with a bald, red neck?

I'm less sure what <guidy> means in this context. #UsaTuVoz https://x.com/DizhSa/status/979785485055877120

naa = is/be
chi = when
casantyen = very
nald = cold
"chiru" is a conjuction meaning something like 'and then' or 'but'
"cagyab": I'm not sure but the aspect here, but "rigyab" is 'goes and falls'
guei = ice
