Anyone else growing bladderworts? For this #UtriculariaTuesday, meet Utricularia ‘Merrie Heart,’ a cultivar of U. livida from Mexico. This plant spreads vigorously, escaping through the drainage holes at the bottom of its pot.

Purple flower of Utricularia livida ‘Merrie Heart,’ the wrinkled, longitudinal crests near the base of the lower petal are easily seen (dark purple). The margin of the lower petal is ruffled.

The natural distribution of #Utricularia livida is a bit perplexing. It includes tropical and Southern Africa, Madagascar, and Mexico.
