Mother’s Day was coming up. Bhavna doesn’t usually observe it—at least not the version pushed by greeting card companies, florists, and bottomless brunch menus. These invented holidays, stripped of history and inflated by marketing, mean nothing to me. But I think my mother expected something. I blame too much ad-ridden American TV.
Wednesday was our last quiet day in St. Vincent before heading to Bequia on Saturday for the final leg of our trip. Mother’s Day would fall on Sunday, the day after we left. We knew we wouldn’t be here for it. So I booked a table for three at Bungalow.

One note about restaurants in St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG): they are not vegetarian-friendly. Bhavna is vegetarian. This is a country that eats from the sea and the land—fish, goat, sheep, pig, and fowl. In SVG, you tell people you’re vegetarian and they offer you chicken. You say you don’t eat chicken and they offer fish. Say no to fish and you get a blank stare, like they’re wondering how you haven’t starved to death.

It’s also a country with cable TV, smartphones, and internet access. But somehow, most local businesses haven’t figured out how to put up a basic website that explains what they serve. We spent hours trying to find a place where Bhavna could get something more than french fries and iceberg lettuce. SVG is still a place where you can call a restaurant, have a 20-minute conversation about the menu, and only then be told, “Oh no, we can’t do that.” I genuinely don’t understand how they expect to develop tourism without meeting people where they are—especially if those people are hungry.

I booked a ride with Ranchie to get us to Bungalow at Villa.
Bungalow is perched at the edge of the Villa seaside, just a short walk from where the shoreline meets the boardwalk. It’s one of those places that feels like it was designed for postcards—palms swaying, ocean breeze drifting through, and a wide view across the bay to Young Island. The restaurant offers both air-conditioned indoor seating and an open-air patio, the latter of which looks out onto a stretch of grass that rolls gently toward the water. It’s casual but elegant, the kind of place that tries to balance local charm with the expectations of visiting travellers—sometimes more successfully than others.

Mom wanted to sit outside. She wanted to see the sunset. There’s shaded patio seating, and then seating on the lawn. We went with the patio. Mom wanted photos, but the light was all wrong—too much shade under the roof, too much contrast with the bright sky. Even the iPhone 16 Pro struggled.

I ordered a frozen margarita, fish with herbs, and cole slaw. We had checked the menu before leaving home. Bhavna had picked out a vegetarian option she was genuinely excited about—chickpea fritters with a salad. But when she tried to order, the waiter told us it wasn’t available tonight. She’s used to this kind of letdown but always tries to hide it from me. She smiled and asked for the large salad—the only vegetarian dish still on offer. The waiter gave us a kind smile, but that didn’t make the meal any more satisfying.

While we waited, I stepped out to the narrow boardwalk to take photos. The view across to Young Island was stunning, and further off, Bequia peeked through the haze. It felt strange to see it out there—knowing we’d be on that island in a few days, that this part of the trip was already winding down.

While we ate, a calico cat introduced herself. The staff said her name was Gibbles. They fed her, but she didn’t seem like part of the team. She was tolerated. Probably caught mice, looked cute, begged for scraps. A working cat. Not like Sir Alphonso Mango, who reigns over our home with both charm and entitlement. Gibbles had a job to do.

Then we walked over to Basil at Villa. It’s a bar and restaurant owned by Basil Charles, the man behind Mustique’s famous Basil’s Bar. This place, though, was empty. The kind of empty that makes you wonder if you’re too early or too late. The bartender looked relieved to see us.

I’d made a bad assumption. I thought I could just call Ranchie when we were ready to leave. It was around 8 PM, and we’d just finished our drinks. But he was already off the clock. The bartender kindly called a taxi for us, but it cost more than the usual fare. That moment summed up a lot of my experience with logistics and services in St. Vincent—unreliable, informal, and often more expensive than expected. Our time with Paul at Cumberland Nature Trail felt like the exception, not the norm.
I was annoyed. The hike the day before had wrung me out. I was still carrying the heat and humidity in my bones. I wanted this dinner to be simple. I wanted Bhavna to eat something satisfying. I didn’t get any of that.
What I did get was a quiet reminder that I can plan things for other people and still be left holding my own unmet expectations. Mother’s Day is a made-up holiday. But so is any day you try to shape into something it refuses to become.
