Today a hike in the mountains above #ValleVigezzo 🇮🇹 in #Piemonte. Still quite some snow up here at 1,300 metres a.s.l. this time of the year.
And there’s always a #Vigezzina narrow gauge train close by, taking me from, and to, #Domodossola. A 1950s #FensterAuf ABe8/8 is working the afternoon local.
Impressions from a ride over the #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 metre gauge line earlier this week. I travelled on the afternoon regional for #Domodossola, a service, on the Italian section of the line, usually worked by a 1950s SSIF ABe8/8 unit. It comes with opening windows, very much to the photographer’s delight.
On board a brand new narrow-gauge #Stadler unit on the #Vigezzina line today. This is the 16:51 #Locarno 🇨🇭 to #Domodossola 🇮🇹 “Diretto” service. The speed metre on display might require some additional calibration though: the train moves at a leisurely pace, a far cry from the advertised 150 kph 😉.
S. Maria Maggiore 🇮🇹 on the #Vigezzina narrow gauge line at lunchtime today: pictured is the 10:51 #Locarno to #Domodossola service, stopping here right before noon and worked by a #Centovalli Express unit. The other bonus for the railfan: the plinthed tramcar, opposite the station building.
Over the narrow-gauge #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 line in northern #Piemonte with the #Re to #Domodossola afternoon Regional. This is a charming #SSIF ABe8/8 unit, built in the late 1950s with a 1980s interior. It comes with opening windows, ideal for (quickly) taking a few fresh air pictures.
From the #Locarno🇨🇭area, where the mainline trains run alongside the Lago Maggiore waterfront, westwards with the little trains of the #Centovalli #Vigezzina line to #Re 🇮🇹 for a visit of the Sanctuary and for lunch. Our train is a #Vevey ABe4/6 narrow gauge unit.
I’m really a fan of the little trains on the #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 #Centovalli🇨🇭 railway, in particular of those with opening windows. #SSIF ABe6/6 “Sempione” worked today’s afternoon Regional to #Domodossola, under a perfectly blue sky.

As international as it gets on the #Vigezzina #Centovalli railway line: today’s 15:26 #Domodossola 🇮🇹 to #Locarno🇨🇭“Diretto“ is seen here in both countries. The front part has already entered #Switzerland whereas the rear is still in #Italy: the border is right on the bridge.
The #Locarno🇨🇭to #Domodossola 🇮🇹 railway is currently celebrating 100 years of its existence. Recently, a locally brewed “birra cento” #Centovalli #Vigezzina beer has become available, on the trains and in a local supermarket right next to the railway line. Well then, cheers! 🍻
Most regional services on the Italian side of the #Vigezzina 🇮🇹#Centovalli🇨🇭line are being worked by elderly railcars built in the 1950s and 1960s. They come with opening windows, very much to the photographer’s delight, and to the one of all other passengers on a hot summer day.

The last #Locarno🇨🇭to #Domodossola 🇮🇹 through service of the day regularly brings an older #SSIF unit out on the #Centovalli #Vigezzina line.

A day out on the #Centovalli🇨🇭 #Vigezzina 🇮🇹 line. The #SSIF #ABe8/8 units, built 1956, are still going strong, including on the #Locarno to #Domodossola “Diretto” services. A “Birra 100”, brewed locally for the line’s centenary and for purchase from the #minibar trolley, comes in handy.
