Food… in space! When I was a kid in 60s drinking Tang was freaking patriotic because that’s what our brave astronauts drank…in space! Later came the Space Food Sticks and Astronaut Ice Cream (delicious) but Tang holds a special place in food history

I don’t think I’ve ever seen canned whole chicken, bones and all, in real life but I imagine it would look more like the Sweet Sue than the Hormel, although I’m pretty sure the Hormel had a little help from the art department.

Hey ladies. Listen up. Bread is not your enemy and ice cream sundaes are delicious. Tell the “little man” to enjoy the panbroiled liver and grapefruit because he isn’t exactly Tyrone Power either

The good folks in the Del Monte test kitchen never disappoint. Maybe the green blob is a play on Kryptonite and Super(man)? Not to mention it looks tacky and not like a paid-for, big client ad

“Hey, Chet, a buncha stoners at Del Monte want a new angle. Gimme something folks have never associated with canned corn before”
“Uhhh…exercise?”
“Say no more”

Our friends in the Del Monte test kitchen are high again. Or still. I’d like to think that Julia Child would kick their collective asses for referring to the thing on the left as an
omelet. And be advised that the “custard” has pea juice in it

I thought this was a joke recipe but it seems to be real. I know Weight Watchers has helped a lot of people with healthy eating habits over the decades, but what the hell is this? Frozen cheese and raw broccoli? How are you even supposed to eat that?

This is so freaking wrong I can’t even justify it with “the 60s were weird”
It’s not even truth in advertising because the “recipe” says to cut the Vienna sausages in half (because whole ones are too filling?) and these are clearly uncut. Raw onion rings are a nice touch

How to remove all of the nutritional value of eggs:
•Add mayonnaise
•Fry in margarine
•Plate with 4 servings of bacon
(I’m not hating on bacon. I love bacon. This is just an inappropriate amount for a 2 egg scramble)

If you’re dining in tonight and haven’t settled on the menu I’ve got you covered. Unfortunately, the crusty salmon entree is a bit fuzzy, but it’s got 2 pounds of canned salmon and 2 pounds of peas. You can figure it out.
But yay pie! Okay, it’s potato salad pie, but pie!

Sue. Girl. I feel you. Sometimes life comes at you fast and you run out of time, but this bounty of beige is not the way. I’m not sure what year this is but pizza has been a thing since the 40s here. Also, I think Sue was in Plan 9 From Outer Space

Stop it, Kellogg’s. Just stop. Just because kids like corn dogs doesn’t mean you can foist this abomination on an unsuspecting public. This isn’t a homemade corn dog. Also, who has hefty skewers like that on hand?

I ran this abomination through a recipe calculator, and the unadorned Date Loaf alone (without embellishments) is more than 3000 calories of mostly sugar. Those marshmallows are 90 calories each (but fat free!) but I’m sure the tart lemon sauce will cut down that sugar

This is the origin story of Chex mix, with some variations both sweet and savory. Unfortunately for the fine folks at Ralston, butter (and oleo) rationing would soon kick in and I don’t imagine a person would be willing to use 1/4 of their monthly allotment of butter for a snack

Well this is new information! I didn’t know that Jeno’s made Snack Logs (1970) The ad also suggests that it’s also a main dish option but I’m not sure about that. These only lasted a year or two, but Hot Pockets didn’t hit the market until 1983, so I’m seeing a missed opportunity

I’m not sure where this place is, but it appears to be an in-store deli somewhere in the 1960s. The roast/corned beef seems a little expensive, but everything else looks great! I would like a half pound of Jell-O for 20¢, please. The red flavor

I went to Jurassic High School so I remember the 1960s pretty well, but I have found a trove of snack crackers that I’ve never seen before:
*Celery Thins (1961)
*Warm Welcome! (Meatball flavored crackers, 1964)
*Salt-Tang sticks (1960)
*Buttons and Bows (1967)
The 60s were weird, man

We haven’t visited the offerings of those insane food scientists at the mid-century Del Monte test kitchens in a while, so who wants some cream corn on toast? It’s “new for lunch or supper”
I’m not sure what a Pattycake is but it’s got a pound of corn on it, so dig in!

I have it on first hand authority from a friend of Ms Hale that she struggled with even cooking oatmeal, so I assume her cook provided this recipe.
I’ve never made a homemade Caesar salad so I’m just going to assume Raymond is correct

Here are a couple of wartime (both wars) ads.
The coffee ad is from 1942, and rationing kicked in in November that year.
The cake recipe is from 1918 and boasts “no wheat, eggs, butter or milk” They get points for lots of spices, but I can only imagine it’s quite…dense

Now Eleanor. Girl. Let’s talk. You’re my favorite first lady but in the name of good desserts this is not pudding. It’s bread and berries. Leave the cooking to the help
