The English language poster for the French zapata western 'Viva Maria!' (1965). Directed by Louis Malle. Starring Brigitte Bardot, Jeanne Moreau, Claudio Brook, Paulette Dubost, Carlos Lopez Moctezuma, Poldo Bendandi, Gregor von Rezzori, Francisco Reiguera, Jonathan Eden and George Hamilton.

On top of the poster the tagline "The world will never forget the two heroines who charged into battle undaunted, unafraid and... Undressed!". Below the tagline a small image of the film's two stars (Brigitte Bardot, a blonde haired woman, on the left and Jeanne Moreau, a brown haired woman, on the right) behind a Maxim machine gun. Bardot's holding the machine gun and Moreau's stuck fingers in her ears. In the middle of the poster on the right side an illustration of the film's two stars (Bardot on the left, Moreau on the right) standing side by side looking at each other wearing long black gloves, a light blue bodice, a red short skirt, garter belts and long black stockings. On the left side the tagline "Viva Bardot Viva Moreau" on top of the film's title with an added text "Viva Don't Miss It!" in brackets next to it.

Frame from the French zapata western 'Viva Maria!' (1965). Blonde woman (Brigitte Bardot as Maria II) wearing a white shirt and a long light blue skirt is standing on a hilltop next to a cannon she's fired. There's a couple of dead uniformed soldiers lying on the ground to her right. Green hills in the background.

Frame from the French zapata western 'Viva Maria!' (1965). The message "Viva Maria" painted in red on a wall in an early 20th Century Latin American town. A dead man wearing a blue suit lying on the ground with a brush on his right hand. There's a line of red paint going from the unfinished A towards the brush in the dead man's hand on the ground.

Spaghetti and/or zapata western aficianados would probably still find #VivaMaria interesting enough. But given how farcical it is at times it almost feels like a (pretty unamusing) parody. Reminded me of Leone's Duck, You Sucker/A Fistful of Dynamite. Or Salma Haeyk & Penelope Cruz's Bandidas. 📽️🎞️

If Brigitte Bardot or Jeanne Moreau would tickle my fancy I probably wouldn't be quite as harsh with my judgement... But even though #VivaMaria is technically well-made albeit lighthearted zapata western it left me cold overall. Relies too much on just BB's and Moreau's female charms. 📽️🎞️
