Warhol did not create many still lifes, which makes his Space Fruit portfolio all the more special. In this series of screen prints from the 1970s, the artist scattered lemons, oranges, cantaloupes, cherries and other fruits across a flat color surface (one type of fruit per composition). In “Space Fruit: Lemons”, the lemons appear with various degrees of detail – some have textured, almost photographic detail while others are simply yellow blobs – and solid pink and blue areas suggesting shadows. The background is a minty green here, but in another run the background is a candy pink. It is an artificial space, with artificial color, without the stability of a table top surface as per more traditional still life compositions. Warhol’s composition is playful and graphic.

On June 3, 1968, The Factory, Warhol’s bustling New York studio, was alive with its usual swirl of artists and outsiders. Among the visitors that day was Valerie Solanas, a writer on the fringes of the underground scene. She had once handed Warhol a script she hoped he would produce. When he misplaced it, she grew convinced that he was trying to steal her work — a belief that deepened alongside her growing paranoia. Solanas had already drawn attention for her radical SCUM Manifesto, a fierce and controversial text calling for the dismantling of male-dominated society. By the late 1960s, however, her mental health had deteriorated significantly. On that June afternoon, she walked into The Factory carrying a gun — and opened fire. Warhol was struck multiple times. The wounds were devastating, tearing through his body and leaving him on the brink of death. For a brief moment, doctors believed he was gone. Against the odds, surgeons managed to revive him, but survival came at a heavy cost. The damage to his organs was so severe that he would rely on a surgical corset for the rest of his life, his movements forever shaped by that day’s violence. After the shooting, Solanas did not flee far. She made her way to Times Square, approached a police officer, and calmly surrendered. She handed over the weapons — a .32 semi-automatic pistol and a .22 revolver — and confessed to what she had done. In the months that followed, she was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. The courts sentenced her to three years in prison, and she was released in late 1971. Meanwhile, Warhol returned to his art, changed in ways both visible and invisible — carrying with him not only the scars on his body but the memory of a moment that reshaped the rest of his life.
