My first proper job was in the book department of the Leicester branch of #WHSmiths. There was a lot of sneering back then about the quality of its offering which baffled little old me from the burbs who thought it was the height of sophistication to work in an Actual Bookshop.

Of course #WHSmiths really started to fail in 1982 when, after I'd heard Annie Nightingale play this one Sunday & the next Saturday the lady in the brown tabard in their upstairs record section looked at me nonplussed & pointed at some movie soundtracks. It took me 20 yrs & moving to LDN to find it

😢Always loved "Smiths", I have so many rando memories. Although I did once get kicked out of one for reading the computer magazines too long! Best of it is, I'd only been in there about 15 mins, but the battleaxe till lady claimed I'd been in there over 1/2 an hour! 🤣😂🤣 #whSmiths #whsmithsmemories

old cassette inlay for a computer program ENDZONE
Back in the 1980s and v early 1990s I used to get all the cassettes for my Sinclair Spectrum game, ENDZONE, from #whsmiths and the stamp thingie from Prontaprint. I sold over 1,000 copies of the game, two cassettes per game, so that was a lot of trips to WH Smiths in #colchester

As someone who stares at screens all sodding day, I do like to get away from them. I like books, because, well - durr. But I also like magazines, which have been a big part of my life for decades. Without #WHSmiths, where am I to get them? Newsagents are pretty much dead, and mail order is soulless.

I don’t know if TG Jones is an existing brand. I’ve been unable to discern that from searching this morning. I don’t recall having ever heard of it m’self. And it doesn’t sound like many others in the UK have either.

Childhood memories of WH Smith. Getting a record token in a birthday card.
Staines High St 1970’s & the groovy bubble light show projected onto the wall of the staircase that led to the record department, & the sound of music playing as you climbed the stairs. All felt a bit naughty.😏

Sure, I still use #WHSmiths as my go to place for stationary on the rare occasions I now need it. It’s one of the few physical stores I can still do that in at short notice. But half my local store is now given over to Toys R Us. And the lines stocked as a Smiths are a shadow of their past self.

Back in the 90s and early 2000s I bought physical movies, TV shows and videogames from #WHSmiths. I have a sneaking suspicion that I may have purchased my first DVD from there. Those lines all long gone now.

For people working in traditional publishing, such genre magazines and those working in UK comics, #WHSmiths frequently frustrated. Publications set out in some truly scattershot fashions. Many publications only ordered and displayed if people came in to request them. It’s been an unreliable mess.

Well, this is depressing news to wake up to.
#WHSmiths has arguably made some questionable decisions on cutting back what they stock, since the early 2000s. But it sort of is a British institution.
TGJones is not.
