Protecting Neighbourhood Retail: Save Our Shops

Councillor James Pasternak from the neighbourhood to our west has launched
a campaign that may be of interest to residents in our community who rely on
nearby retail services.

The proposal for 75 Billy Bishop Way would replace essential neighbourhood
retail with five towers reaching up to 49 storeys. Beyond the immediate impact
on the Wilson community, there are broader concerns about the precedent
rezoning could create.

When land is rezoned, its value often increases instantly. This can place
important amenities and businesses at risk as redevelopment pressures grow. A
similar issue is currently emerging near the Ontario Food Terminal, where a
development application could threaten the terminal and the surrounding
businesses that form a critical ecosystem supporting food distribution across
Ontario.

Changes like this can also create cascading pressure on other important sites,
including nearby retail hubs such as the Costco Wholesale — Billy Bishop
Way. If this issue matters to you, please consider learning more about
Councillor Pasternak’s campaign and supporting the effort.

Hi everyone, I'm hoping someone here might have some insight into a zoning question that's
come up in Willowdale.

A three-storey quadplex with a garden suite is currently going up on Betty Ann, and I'm trying
to understand how it moved forward without any public notice, community consultation, or a
zoning meeting.

From what | can tell, nothing was posted, no letters were sent out, and there wasn't any
opportunity for residents to ask questions or give feedback. The permits weren't even posted
on site until post demolition and scop has increased to quadplex. I'm wondering if this type of
build is now allowed as-of-right under newer zoning rules, or if there's something specific
about this property that exempts it from the usual process.

If anyone has experience with recent zoning changes, minor variances, or how multi-unit
builds and garden suites get approved, I'd really appreciate your insight. It would be great to
understand what the rules actually are so we all know what to expect with future developments
inthe area

Read in my local #Willowdale facebook group. So glad those people can't block... fourplex anymore.

Imagine the outrage if a 3 million dollar home was to be built and would require letters, public consultations, etc, etc. But yet, when it's 4 families […]

SAFETY REMINDER: Darker days mean less visibility on the road.

As we experience shorter days and longer nights, combined with fog, rain, snow,
or storms, it can be very hard for drivers to see pedestrians. Wearing dark
clothing makes it even more difficult to be noticed.

A simple, bright reflective vest—even an inexpensive one from a dollar store—
can make all the difference.

Be seen. Be safe. Shine bright this season.

Lily Cheng would like to tell you that it's important to wear reflective vest as a pedestrian, but has nothing to say to drivers about slowing down when conditions are bad.

I guess my understanding of the motion wasn't complete, while for full neighborhood it would be restricted to East York and Toronto, it would bring it city-wide on what the city considers major streets.

Well that part is a win.

For example, that's […]

Willowdale Community Survey: Neighbourhood Retail and Services The City of Toronto is reviewing how small-scale retail and services—like cafés, corner shops, and community spaces—can better serve residents in neighbourhoods. This work is part of the Expanding Housing Options in Neighbourhoods (EHON) initiative. You can review the report from staff to Planning and Housing Committee on Nov 30th, by clicking here. Your feedback will help Councillor Cheng’s office understand what types of neighbourhood retail and services matter most to Willowdale residents and where they should be located. This short survey will take about 5 minutes to complete.

I love it when my councillor tells me that my condo, and others like it, have no community. Lily Cheng only sees single family homeowners as "real" residents of Willowdale. The rest of us rabble can get bent, apparently #willowdale #Toronto #housing

Nice day for a run through the center of #willowdale! When I come through here, I always see a vibrant, dense neighborhood. I can't believe our councillor Lily Cheng would call this "dystopian"! I prefer to celebrate the city, personally. #YongeNorthYork #toronto

A Balanced View on Transit and Parking

Despite South Korea’s world-class public transit system, cars still play an essential role in daily life, and that’s okay. Unlike Toronto, which struggles with underdeveloped transit while aggressively reducing car infrastructure, Korea embraces a multi-modal future. Wide roads accommodate cars, dedicated bus lanes, and bike paths, all without sacrificing one for the other. One standout example was a sleek, modern parking structure that reminded me of the importance of parking availability in supporting our local businesses in a future, denser Willowdale.

Last week, | attended an exhibition organized by the Nova Foundation, created to raise awareness about the Nova Music Festival tragedy, where Hamas launched a brutal assault that resulted in the deaths of 1,195 people and the taking of 253 hostages..

Walking through the exhibit was emotionally difficult. It included texts and video footage of young people desperately calling their parents for help, vivid accounts of those trapped in the horror, and raw depictions of the brutal violence that occurred. The sheer cruelty of the attack and the way the victims were dehumanized was deeply painful to witness — and hard to comprehend.

The exhibition ends on a note of hope, highlighting the Nova Foundation's work in supporting victims' families as they navigate the healing journey.

While | strongly encourage people to visit the exhibition to better understand the reality of what happened, | want to offer a word of caution. The content is fairly graphic and emotionally intense. For those who have experienced trauma or are living with mental health conditions such as anxiety, depression, or PTSD, it may be particularly triggering.

Research has shown that exposure to violent or distressing media, such as the footage from the October 7 attacks, can significantly increase the risk of developing PTSD symptoms, especially in individuals with pre-existing mental health vulnerabilities.
