“At the end of the day, what's important is that we are being honest with children, & that children are seeing themselves represented in every way, not just in books, but also in the people who are telling the stories—so they know they can put their stories out into the world.” -Angela Dalton

I was struck by how the oral arguments for #MahmoudvTaylor at #SCOTUS seemed to ignore actual children. So, thank you, @onceuponaban.bsky.social for this discussion!

A third grader said "thank you for putting up a book with someone who looks like me" after I reminded a class where to find biographies in our library. A biography about Ibtihaj Muhammad was on display. Happy Monday! #wndb #skybrarian #schoollibrary

And I have continued to read these stories, especially picture books and middle grade books. I used to tell myself it was so I could curate books for my students, but eventually I realized it was also for me. Reading is humanizing. 💖 #WeNeedDiverseBooks #WNDB #literacies

Screenshot of an interview with literary agent Anjali Singh. I've highlighted:

Now, as an industry veteran, she's able to reflect on the experience of young professions in the workplace today. "A lot of the diversity push is from the bottom u p,"she says. "You put young people of color, many of whom don't come from privileged backgrounds, in very subservient positions. When you come from a particular socioeconomic position, an apprenticeship doesn't have the same cost, because you know you're going to end up ok. But when you're the child of first-generation immigrants, and you're put in this position where there's no clear path forward, no mentorship, and no true commitment from the top down to support you-why would you stay?"

Screenshot of an interview with literary agent Regina Brooks, from which I've circled the text:

Literary agent Regina Brooks believes that the media "misses the boat and rehashes what everyone already knows" in conversations about diversity in publishing. "Yes, there have been fluctuations in leadership roles in editorial," she says. "But if I'm an editor of color and I'm bringing in authors of color, who are the marketing people? Who are the publicity people? you can't do it on your own. Part of the reason why the editorial space has been so challenging and fraught is because the ecosystem is not there to support it.

To support teachers in updating their read alouds, if they request an older classic, I pull more contemporary titles to choose from as well. It's a little push I can give for more current & inclusive representation.
